Struq Secures $8.5 million From Reed Elsevier, Pentech, Allen & Co

52258v2-max-250x250The problem with internet advertising - and there are many - is that while there are plenty of users who interact with ads, the hard part is working out which users are actually the most valuable to advertisers. While the advertising industry normally sends one brand message and blasts it out across all channels, Struq, an advertising platform startup, works out which users show behavioral patterns that make them statistically more likely to purchase. But instead of showing them the one brand message it shows video or display ads most likely to chime with that user. To that end it's attracted the attention of major backers today, with a significant $8.5 million funding round from Reed Elsevier Ventures, Pentech Ventures and Allen & Company LLC.

New Crowdsourcing Launch: AskYourUsers.com Uses LinkedIn To Help You Find People For Microconsulting Projects

askyourusers.comCrowdsourcing and crowdfunding have been two of the biggest trends to affect how businesses -- especially small businesses and sole traders -- raise money, with sites like Kickstarter.com and in the UK Funding Circle attracting a attention for being a great way of getting backing for projects or business ideas bypassing the traditional and expensive world of bank loans in the process. Now a site is launching that gives this model an additional twist: AskYourUsers.com is a simple service that helps you find people for microconsulting projects lasting no more than 15 minutes -- and it uses your LinkedIn network to help you find them. From the demo that I have seen, the service is basically that simple, but it works very smoothly, and definitely solves a need -- one that Dunne and her co-founder, Chris Bumgarder, essentially stumbled on unintentionally...

OWC's Mercury Accelsior PCIe SSD is Mac bootable, strictly neutral

If you've ever tried to jam a regular SSD into your Mac, then you'll know that many off-the-shelf drives feel like they're tailored and tested for, ahem, someone else. Not so with OWC's Mercury Accelsior, which claims to be the only Mac bootable and Mac supported PCIe SSD on the market. Regardless of which platform you use it with, however, the dual-SandForce card promises some neat tricks with its 24nm Toshiba Toggle NAND. Sequential read and write speeds are around 50 percent higher than what you'd get from a regular SATA III drive, with the cheapest 120GB model ($360) offering 758MB/s reads and 743MB/s writes. Random performance is notched up too, with around 100K IOPS in both directions. The 960GB version costs a coldly precise $2,096, but still -- a potential side order for when the Mac Pro line finally gets another refresh?

Space Shuttle Discovery salutes Washington on historic final flight

As historic flights go, this has to be right up there with the best of 'em. Space Shuttle Discovery performed a final fly-by over the capital, and created a trail of excited spotters as it did so. Perched atop a Boeing 747, the iconic craft was flying at a relatively low 1,500 feet according to NASA. Pictures of the voyage have been popping up on social media and image sharing sites as it headed in from the west, before coming to its final resting place at a special off-shoot of the Smithsonian Institute's National Air and Space Museum near Dulles Airport. Have you spotted Discovery? Be sure to add links in the comments if you do.

Ryan O'Neal Has Stage 4 Prostate Cancer [Report]

ryan-oneal-prostate-cancer-2012Ryan O?Neal, longtime love interest of the late Farrah Fawcett and father of former child-star Tatum, has revealed recently that he has been diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer.

In a statement to People magazine on Friday, the 70-year-old Love Story actor said:

?Although I was shocked and stunned by the news, I feel fortunate that it was detected early and according to my extraordinary team of doctors the prognosis is positive for a full recovery.?

He then added:

?I am deeply grateful for the support of my friends and family during this time, and I urge everyone to get regular check-ups, as early detection is the best defense against this horrible disease that has afflicted so many.?

The NY Post points out that this is not O?Neal?s first time dealing with a cancer diagnosis ? in 2001 Ryan was treated for leukemia, and eventually went into remission five years later.

O?Neal also stayed by Fawcett?s side as she waged a public battle with anal cancer, passing away in 2009 at age 62.

Following Ryan O?Neal?s cancer announcement, fans took to the actor?s Facebook to offer words of encouragement and hope.

?Stay positive and bring in the energy of the Universe!! ? Hugs!? one fan wrote, while many chimed in ?Stay strong.?

O?Neal responded to the outpouring of love on Monday, writing, ?Thank you for all the kind words and the prayers,? ?I will be fighting and every bit counts.?

According to WebMD, treatments for stage 4 prostate cancer include hormone therapy, external beam radiation plus hormone therapy, and surgery (TURP) to relieve symptoms such as bleeding or urinary obstruction.

In addition to preparing for his battle with cancer, Ryan O?Neal is getting ready to release ?Book of Us: My Life with Farrah,? a memoir detailing his relationship with Fawcett.

Tupac Takes Coachella Stage Via Hologram With Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg

The pair's historic set also included surprise guests Eminem, 50 Cent and Wiz Khalifa.

INDIO, CaliforniaDr. Dre and Snoop Dogg wowed Coachella's final night Sunday with a roster of guests way beyond what even the rumors could have predicted. Backed by a live band and unexpectedly artsy video screens, no less than Eminem, 50 Cent, Warren G and a hologram of Tupac graced the stage.

As if that wasn't enough, Wiz Khalifa also joined the West Coast hip-hop legends for the anthem of the weekend, "Young, Wild and Free," which had the crowd singing the chorus in unison: "So what we get drunk/ So what we smoke weed/ We're just having fun/ We don't care who sees/ So what we go out/ That's how it's supposed to be/ Living young and wild and free."

Kendrick Lamar — who performed an afternoon set on the main stage Friday — also joined the pair for "The Recipe," his new joint featuring Dre, who introduced him as "straight outta Compton."

After their own "The Next Episode" and "Deep Cover (187 on an Undercover Cop)," Dre and Snoop covered House of Pain's "Jump Around." The hardest moment of the night came when 50 Cent stormed the stage for "What Up Gangsta" with Tony Yayo by his side, segueing into "P.I.M.P." with tropical calypso steel drums and his 2003 breakthrough hit, "In Da Club."

Snoop paid homage to his late homey Nate Dogg, performing "Ain't No Fun" alongside Kurupt and Warren G as the screens displayed photos of Nate, Snoop and the rest of the Dogg Pound.

The appearance of the late Tupac in very realistic hologram form, which was amazing to some and creepy to others, brought "Hail Mary" and "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted."

Eminem even came out for "I Need a Doctor," a dubstep-flavored "Forgot About Dre" and "Till I Collapse."

Capping their historic set with "What's My Name?" and "Still D.R.E.," Dre and Snoop disappeared below the stage with the Good Doctor proclaiming to the adoring audience, "I wanna say thank you for the love for so many years."

Sunday's surprise guests didn't stop there though, as Rihanna joined Calvin Harris for her latest single, "Where Have You Been," and "We Found Love," and Rage Against the Machine spitter Zack de la Rocha lent his lyrics to DJ Shadow.

Earlier in the night, the main stage was handled by French electronic duo Justice and the much-anticipated At the Drive-In reunion. The influential post-hardcore band had heads banging to "Pattern Against User," "Lopsided," "Enfilade" and slowed it down a bit with the melodic "Napoleon Solo."

Elsewhere, the Sahara dance tent hosted Avicii, the Weeknd grooved a huge crowd at the Outdoor Stage as he sang the sun down with his soulful jams, and Florence and the Machine had the ladies lifted with the frontwoman's request that the "strong gentleman in the house" offer their shoulders for "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)."

In response to last year's event selling out — a week after the 2011 lineup was announced — the festival is experimenting with featuring the same artists for two consecutive three-day weekends: April 13-15 and April 20-22.

At Coachella's uncharacteristically cold and glooming first day Friday, the Black Keys and Swedish House Mafia kept fans warm. Saturday brought Radiohead, Bon Iver and David Guetta with Usher.

Creamy macaroni and cheese with country ham and leeks

Once you master this basic recipe, you can alter it to your pleasing.

From the first time I made macaroni and cheese, I?ve used this basic recipe, with the sauce you simply stir up.? We were not a big macaroni and cheese family, and never had any version from the box until college, when the hot pot was our main cooking apparatus and I had an ingenious roommate.?

Perre Magness has studied food and cooking around the world, mostly by eating, but also through serious study. Coursework at Le Cordon Bleu London and intensive courses in Morocco, Thailand and France has broadened her own culinary skill and palate. The kitchen of choice is at home, cooking like most people, experimenting with unique but practical ideas.

Recent posts

I think I might have originally found the recipe in a kids? cookbook, but I don?t really remember. The recipe served me well for years, particularly in a poorly equipped kitchen in graduate school. And I just thought this was how mac and cheese was made. It was years before I learned that most macaroni and cheese recipes start with a roux made into a cream sauce.

As I progressed in the kitchen, I started working on recipes made with b?chamel sauce, white wine based sauces, an onion soubise, exotic cheeses and the like. But for simple meals, I always came back to this method. And I?ve really decided I like it better. It?s very creamy, very cheesy, and of course could not be simpler. So now I make it with cheese only, or flavorful add-ins.

This version is my favorite, and based on a macaroni and cheese served at a favorite restaurant.? I am sure they use a great more expertise and skill in making it, but I manage to get the flavors I love spot-on.?I like corkscrew-y cavatappi pasta, but regular macaroni, or?shells, or?farfalle work equally well.??Once you have this simple, basic recipe down, you can alter it however you please ? with different cheeses, added spices, bacon or roasted chicken ? the possibilities are endless.

Creamy Macaroni and Cheese with Country Ham and Leeks
Serves 6, 8 as a side dish?

4 leeks
6 tablespoons butter, divided
1/4 cup white wine [editor's note: substitute cooking wine or chicken broth of the same amount]
8 ounces uncookedelbow macaroni or cavatappi noodles
8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese
8 ounces white cheddar cheese
4 ounces fontina cheese
2 cups whole milk
1/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and ground black pepper to taste
8 ounces country ham, finely diced

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Butter a 2 quart baking dish well.

Slice the white and palest green parts of the leek in half lengthwise, then slice into half-moons. Rinse the leeks very well in a colander under cool running water and shake to drain. Melt 4 tablespoons butter in a medium sauce pan over medium-high heat and add the leeks, with a little water clinging to them, and stir to coat. Pour in the white wine and 1/4 cup water, cover the pan and cook, stirring occasionally until the leeks are wilted, transparent and soft, about 20 minutes. If needed, add a bit more water to prevent sticking.

Meanwhile, cook the macaroni according to package instructions in well-salted water.? Drain and return to the pan off the heat. ?Stir 2 tablespoons butter into the pasta to melt and coat to prevent sticking. Leave to cool.

Grate all the cheeses and toss together. In a bowl, whisk together the milk, flour, garlic powder, salt and black pepper. Shake well for at least a minute until the flour is completely mixed with the milk.

Toss together the cooled pasta and the most of the grated cheeses, reserving a few handfuls for the top of the dish. Stir in the leeks and diced country ham until evenly distributed. Pour over the milk mixture and stir thoroughly until well mixed. Spoon into the buttered dish and spread out to create an even surface. Sprinkle over the remaining cheese.

Bake for about 30 minutes, until golden on top and bubbling and heated through.
