(AP) ? Instead of coming from behind, Peyton Manning spent the second half piling it on.

Off to a fast start for the first time as a Bronco, Manning led Denver to three third-quarter touchdowns Sunday in a stress-free, 37-6 rout over the Oakland Raiders ? the first time Denver has beaten its AFC West rival at home since 2007.

Denver (2-2) outscored the Raiders 27-0 in the second half.

Picking and poking with short crossing routes and screen passes against a depleted Oakland defense, Manning finished with 338 yards and three scores. For the second straight game, he didn't throw an interception. Last week, he set a career high with 26 incompletions. This week, he threw eight, with 30 completions.

Willis McGahee finished with 112 yards rushing for the Broncos for his 32nd career 100-yard game, the most of any active player.

Manning led the Broncos to their first opening-quarter touchdown of the season ? an 11-play, 80-yard drive on the game's first possession that included drive-sustaining completions on third-and-6 and fourth-and-1. He capped it with a 22-yard touchdown pass ? zipped through triple coverage to Joel Dreessen, who laid out for the catch.

Shortly after that, Manning answered a lot of questions about his arm strength, rolling to his right, stopping on a dime, leaving his feet and throwing across his body for a 23-yard completion to Demaryius Thomas. That set up a field goal and a 10-3 lead. The Broncos gained 101 more yards than the Raiders in the first half, but led 10-6 going into the locker room.

The game never felt that close and soon after the teams returned, it wasn't anymore.

Manning drove the Broncos 79 and 62 yards for touchdowns, capping one drive off with a short pass that Eric Decker took in for a 17-yard touchdown and the other with a similar 14-yard connection with Lance Ball.

In between, David Bruton got his hand on a Shane Lechler punt to give the Broncos the ball at the Oakland 18. McGahee capped that four-play drive with a 2-yard score up the middle.

By the time the third quarter was over, the Broncos led 31-6. Their 21 points were 14 more than they'd scored in the third quarters of their first three games combined.

Oakland, meanwhile, has now been outscored 55-7 in the third quarter. Under new coach Dennis Allen ? Denver's defensive coordinator last year ? the Raiders have allowed more points over the first four games (125) than in any year except 1961 and 1962, before the late Al Davis took over.

Carson Palmer finished 19 for 34 for 202 yards for the Raiders (1-3) and the Broncos, who had allowed Darren McFadden 508 yards and three touchdowns over the last four meetings, held him to 34 yards on 13 carries.

Oakland came in without injured starting cornerback Shawntae Spencer, which forced the Raiders to move a natural safety, Michael Huff, over to the corner and bring in backup Matt Giordano to take his place.

All of which made the league's 23rd-ranked defense coming in that much more vulnerable. Manning, who padded his record total of 300-yard passing games to 65, looked like the Manning of old, standing at the line, diagnosing a defense, then choosing, in most cases, to throw quick screens or crossing routes, which his receivers turned into big gains.

Thomas finished with five catches for 103 yards, Decker had seven catches for 79 and McGahee caught six balls out of the backfield for 23 yards.

The referees were no factor in this game. They called nine penalties, five for 41 yards against the newly disciplined Raiders, who came into the game near the bottom of the league in that category and will stay there.

The Broncos, meanwhile, had amassed more than $150,000 in fines over the first three weeks and, though there weren't any obviously finable infractions in this one, they played like bullies, outgaining the Raiders 503-237. Oakland didn't get its first first down of the second half until the 12:45 mark of the fourth quarter.

Fantasy Football - Choosing a Sure Thing

If you play fantasy football and were looking for a break out star to draft this year, there were plenty to choose from:

Owen Daniels, Tight End for the Houston Texans

A.J. Green, Wide Receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals

Jahvid Best, Running Back for the Detroit Lions

Kevin Kolb, Quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals

LeSean McCoy, Running Back for the Philadelphia Eagles

If you keep up with football news and looked closely at fantasy rankings at the start of the season, there was one player that stood out above the rest. That pick was LeSean McCoy. If you picked him for your fantasy football team, especially if you are part of a league that gives bonus points for receptions, you probably thought you had a great pick.

In 2010 - his first season as a starter - the Philadelphia Eagles Running Back led all running backs with 78 catches. Thoughts were that he would be as productive this year while working to increase his 1,080 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns.

Although their defense is chock full of new players including CB Nnamdi Asomugha, DE Jason Babin, CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and DT Cullen Jenkins, the truth is it might take a while for these new additions to assimilate into the team and adapt to the Eagle's defensive system.

In taking a look at the offensive line-up: QB Michael Vick with 3,018 passing yards, 676 rushing yards, and 30 total touchdowns, receivers DeSean Jackson (1,056 receiving yards) and Jeremy Maclin (10 TDs) and you have a winning combination.

Also, kudos to the Eagles for signing up QB Vince Young and RB Ronnie Brown as stellar backups - in the event Vick and McCoy sustain injuries.
McCoy is on track in week 8 to match his stats from last year. If you drafted him to your fantasy football team, you are probably glad that you made that pick.

LONDON (AP) ? Posters, set models and Daniel Craig's swim trunks are among items up for grabs in an auction of memorabilia from the James Bond movies.

Forty lots are being sold in an online auction with bidding open Friday to Oct. 8. Ten more items will go under the hammer at Christie's on Oct. 5, designated Global James Bond Day by the movies' producers.

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) ? On a bright autumn day, Renato Grbic was out fishing on the Danube with his brother when he heard a big splash. At first, he thought somebody had thrown something off the bridge.

Then he saw a man flailing in the water.

"We hurried and pulled the man out," Grbic recalls. "I remember telling him: Such a glorious day and you want to kill yourself!"

It was the first time Grbic saved a life. From that day 15 year ago, his own life would never be the same. The bright-eyed, tattooed restaurant owner from a shabby industrial zone on the outskirts of Belgrade has rescued 25 people who tried to kill themselves by jumping off the tall bridge over the Danube.

Always on alert in his little wooden motor boat, the burly 51-year-old has pulled people out of the river's muddy waters without asking for anything in return.

"I couldn't turn my back on them," Grbic said. "They are desperate people."

Grbic has been dubbed the "Superman of the Danube" by his admirers and awarded a hero's plaque by Belgrade city authorities. But even "Superman" can't save everybody who jumps off the 18-meter- (60-foot-) high bridge: At least as many as he had saved have killed themselves at the spot since Grbic's first rescue.

"When I hear that someone has jumped and I wasn't there I really feel bad," he said. "My eyes are always on the bridge."

The Pancevo bridge became a favored suicide spot because it's Belgrade's only bridge over the Danube, which is bigger and colder and has stronger underwater currents than the city's other river, the Sava.

The first person Grbic pulled out of the Danube turned out to be mental patient. Grbic took him ashore, gave him dry clothes, hot tea and cigarettes. Later, an ambulance came and took the man away.

"That was it," Grbic says. "He didn't speak, they never do."

Over the years, Grbic has rescued men and women of all ages and social backgrounds. Grbic remembers them all, but "they never return or call, they hardly ever say thank you."

Goran Penev, a researcher with Serbia's Institute of Social Sciences, said Serbia's suicide rate is at the upper side of the European average. Penev noted there was a sharp rise in the early 1990s, at the beginning of the wars in the former Yugoslavia, but the situation has been relatively stable ever since. In 2011, nearly 1,300 people in Serbia ? a country of 7 million people ? took their lives.

Grbic has found that some of the people he rescued suffered from cancer or other terminal illnesses, while others cited poverty or unrequited love.

All, he said, felt lonely.

"It is a cry for help," he said. "They often do it in daytime so they would be seen, they want attention, love."

Only a couple weeks ago, a 22-year-old girl threw herself off the bridge near Grbic's restaurant. He was there to pick her up and ask: "Why did you do it?"

"For my boyfriend," she replied. "Do you think he would do it for you?" he asked in return.

Grbic said the girl was conscious and clear-minded when he plucked her out of the water. In winter, however, it is a question of minutes before people will lose consciousness in the freezing Danube and drown.

On one of those days, in mid-January about seven years ago, Grbic was just preparing to turn his boat to the shore and go home ? when he heard a scream.

An 18-year-old woman going through a mental crisis had burst out of her parents' car at the bridge, taken off her jacket and jumped, shouting: "Goodbye mom!"

Grbic said something had made him stick around: "It was a very windy day, a few minutes later and I would have gone."

The girl, Grbic said, is the only one who has stayed in touch.

Every January she comes to his fish restaurant to celebrate her "second birthday." She is married now and has a child. Grbic was invited to the wedding reception.

"My heart leaps every time I see her," he said.

Grbic has little or no track of the others he saved. It would be nice, he says, if they came to tell him how they were over a brandy at his restaurant.

"I gave them a second chance and it was up to them to use it well."

QE Infinity 1.0 Update: Apple, Bonds, Dollar, Gold, Google, Real Estate, Stocks!

QEternity!

Google Soars, Gold Up, Dollar Rallies!

This isn?t over. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is now being called a Kamikaze pilot! David Stockman said the Federal Reserve and central banks are the fundamental threat to the economy. September 13, 2012 was the American Day of Infamy and the death knell of the American Dream. The Federal Reserve announced indefinite quantitative easing, QEternity, plus a zero-interest rate environment extended through mid-2015.

Quantitative easing is an addictive drug. Is the current injection enough? Already there is talk of more QE! Would this be QE Infinity 2.0? How long can this addiction continue? The answer is as long as the U.S. Dollar is the world?s reserve currency -or- the Great American Sovereign Debt Default occurs.

An economic globalization approved by the USA 2-party political dictatorship and funded by the Wall Street Banksters precludes a sound internal USA economic policy and structure. Yet we continue voting for the same empty promises offered by both parties over and over as if this next time will be different. Albert Einstein called this insanity: ?doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?.

The economy itself has fundamentally changed with cheap human labor outsourced abroad (suicide nets and police state control expenses paid for by the slaves via subsistence pay) and rapidly expanding automation (rise of the machines) implemented domestically. The downward spiral from higher paying production jobs to lower paying service jobs to ultimate obsolescence continues for Americans.

Therefore, the Federal Reserve will flood the world with U.S. Dollars, Congress will run budget deficits and borrow more money, interest rates will remain artificially low lest the insolvency of America be revealed by skyrocketing debt service, and the Fed will continue expanding the central bank balance sheet until the bluff is called. Follow along with the Fed Hail Mary, indefinite quantitative easing, as I periodically monitor the value of selected assets in the new QE Infinity Economy.

Looking For RP Partners

Hey everybody!

My name is Jay and I am currently looking do some 1x1 roleplays! I am new to this site, but not to roleplaying.

In terms of genre, I am looking do something involving romance. It could be fantasy-romance, realistic-romance, science fiction-romance, whatever-romance, but romance is a must. I would prefer that you take a role of the male, as I feel more confident that I can make a good female character work if you play her male counterpart. I am not looking for anything NC17; if it happens, simply mentioning it in one or two sentences and moving on is fine. I am open to negotiation on plot lines; I have one idea in mind (listed below) that's a bit cliche, but I figure it's a starting point.

An RP in which enemies become lovers, and have to face the odds of everyone against them. The enemies have to have a long history together, maybe they were once friends but had a falling out? This will take place in the main character?s junior year of high school. Like I mentioned above, I would be playing the girl in this case. There is lots of wiggle room here. Should you be interested in this, we can work on the finer details together.

In general, what I am looking for is someone who will be able to:

-Literate, meaning you must, for the most part, have proper spelling and grammar. I know that people make mistakes because I do, too. However, I would like it if you took some time to proofread before posting.
-Post once a week, at minimum
-Be committed and dedicated. Please don't leave me hanging after only a few posts.

Hope that you are interested, and will contact me soon. I can't respond to PMs just yet, so just drop me a line here and we'll talk.

~Jay

More Web Video Watched on TVs Than on PCs - Peter Kafka ...

Getting Web video off your PC and onto your plasma screen used to be a niche activity. No more: Consumer-tracking service NPD says TV sets are now the most popular way to watch streaming video.

NPD says 45 percent of consumers report that TV is now their primary Web video screen, up from 33 percent last year. It basically swapped places with the PC, which used to account for?48 percent of viewing but now represents 31 percent.*

This is a story about devices: NPD figures that 10 percent of homes now have at least one Internet-enabled TV (though I bet that only a minority of them are actually plugged into the Web), and we?re seeing a steady increase in the use of Web-video peripherals, like Blu-ray players, Apple TVs and Microsoft Xbox 360s.

And it?s also about content: NPD says the most popular service for viewing Web content on TV is Netflix, with 40 percent of connected TV watchers using the service.

Here?s NPD?s general screen breakdown by device. Curious that ?mobile? doesn?t show up as a category; then again, maybe mobile is always a third choice compared to bigger screens. Also odd that the iPad and other tablets don?t break 1 percent.

And here?s NPD?s summary of how Web-to-TV viewers get their stuff on the big screen:

Percentage of device owners that use the device to acquire online content (video, music, games)

  • 43 percent connected TVs
  • 47 percent VG consoles (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3)
  • 62 percent streaming media players (Roku, Boxee, Apple TV)
  • 38 percent computers with direct wired connection to TV
  • 21 percent of BD players

* I?m assuming that mobile accounts for most everything else, but am waiting for confirmation. Update: Nope! See above.

Full Text: President Obama's Speech at the United Nations General Assembly

< style="display:none;"> </div>

The White House released a transcript of President Barack Obama's speech to the United Nations General Assembly (as prepared for delivery). Read the full text below:

Mr. President, Mr. Secretary-General, fellow delegates, ladies and gentleman: I would like to begin today by telling you about an American named Chris Stevens.

Chris was born in a town called Grass Valley, California, the son of a lawyer and a musician. As a young man, Chris joined the Peace Corps, and taught English in Morocco. He came to love and respect the people of North Africa and the Middle East, and he would carry that commitment throughout his life. As a diplomat, he worked from Egypt to Syria; from Saudi Arabia to Libya. He was known for walking the streets of the cities where he worked ? tasting the local food, meeting as many people as he could, speaking Arabic and listening with a broad smile.

Chris went to Benghazi in the early days of the Libyan revolution, arriving on a cargo ship. As America?s representative, he helped the Libyan people as they coped with violent conflict, cared for the wounded, and crafted a vision for a future in which the rights of all Libyans would be respected. After the revolution, he supported the birth of a new democracy, as Libyans held elections, built new institutions, and began to move forward after decades of dictatorship.

Chris Stevens loved his work. He took pride in the country he served, and saw dignity in the people he met. Two weeks ago, he travelled to Benghazi to review plans to establish a new cultural center and modernize a hospital. That?s when America?s compound came under attack. Along with three of his colleagues, Chris was killed in the city he helped to save. He was 52 years old.

I tell you this story because Chris Stevens embodied the best of America. Like his fellow Foreign Service officers, he built bridges across oceans and cultures, and was deeply invested in the international cooperation that the United Nations represents. He acted with humility, but stood up for a set of principles ? a belief that individuals should be free to determine their own destiny, and live with liberty, dignity, justice, and opportunity.

The attacks on our civilians in Benghazi were attacks on America. We are grateful for the assistance we received from the Libyan government and the Libyan people. And there should be no doubt that we will be relentless in tracking down the killers and bringing them to justice. I also appreciate that in recent days, the leaders of other countries in the region ? including Egypt, Tunisia, and Yemen ? have taken steps to secure our diplomatic facilities, and called for calm. So have religious authorities around the globe.

But the attacks of the last two weeks are not simply an assault on America. They are also an assault on the very ideals upon which the United Nations was founded ? the notion that people can resolve their differences peacefully; that diplomacy can take the place of war; and that in an interdependent world, all of us have a stake in working towards greater opportunity and security for our citizens.

If we are serious about upholding these ideals, it will not be enough to put more guards in front of an Embassy; or to put out statements of regret, and wait for the outrage to pass. If we are serious about those ideals, we must speak honestly about the deeper causes of this crisis. Because we face a choice between the forces that would drive us apart, and the hopes we hold in common.

Today, we must affirm that our future will be determined by people like Chris Stevens, and not by his killers. Today, we must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United Nations.

It has been less than two years since a vendor in Tunisia set himself on fire to protest the oppressive corruption in his country, and sparked what became known as the Arab Spring. Since then, the world has been captivated by the transformation that has taken place, and the United States has supported the forces of change.

We were inspired by the Tunisian protests that toppled a dictator, because we recognized our own beliefs in the aspirations of men and women who took to the streets.

We insisted on change in Egypt, because our support for democracy put us on the side of the people.

We supported a transition of leadership in Yemen, because the interests of the people were not being served by a corrupt status quo.

We intervened in Libya alongside a broad coalition, and with the mandate of the U.N. Security Council, because we had the ability to stop the slaughter of innocents; and because we believed that the aspirations of the people were more powerful than a tyrant.

And as we meet here, we again declare that the regime of Bashar al-Assad must come to an end so that the suffering of the Syrian people can stop, and a new dawn can begin.

We have taken these positions because we believe that freedom and self-determination are not unique to one culture. These are not simply American values or Western values ? they are universal values. And even as there will be huge challenges that come with a transition to democracy, I am convinced that ultimately government of the people, by the people and for the people is more likely to bring about the stability, prosperity, and individual opportunity that serve as a basis for peace in our world.

So let us remember that this is a season of progress. For the first time in decades, Tunisians, Egyptians, and Libyans voted for new leaders in elections that were credible, competitive, and fair. This democratic spirit has not been restricted to the Arab World. Over the past year, we have seen peaceful transitions of power in Malawi and Senegal, and a new President in Somalia. In Burma, a President has freed political prisoners and opened a closed society; a courageous dissident has been elected to Parliament; and people look forward to further reform. Around the globe, people are making their voices heard, insisting on their innate dignity, and the right to determine their future.

And yet the turmoil of recent weeks reminds us that the path to democracy does not end with the casting of a ballot. Nelson Mandela once said: ?to be free is not merely to cast off one?s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.? True democracy demands that citizens cannot be thrown in jail because of what they believe, and businesses can be opened without paying a bribe. It depends on the freedom of citizens to speak their minds and assemble without fear; on the rule of law and due process that guarantees the rights of all people.

In other words, true democracy ? real freedom ? is hard work. Those in power have to resist the temptation to crack down on dissent. In hard economic times, countries may be tempted to rally the people around perceived enemies, at home and abroad, rather than focusing on the painstaking work of reform.

Moreover, there will always be those that reject human progress ? dictators who cling to power, corrupt interests that depend upon the status quo; and extremists who fan the flames of hate and division. From Northern Ireland to South Asia; from Africa to the Americas; from the Balkans to the Pacific Rim, we?ve witnessed convulsions that can accompany transitions to a new political order. At times, the conflicts arise along the fault lines of faith, race or tribe; and often they arise from the difficulties of reconciling tradition and faith with the diversity and interdependence of the modern world. In every country, there are those who find different religious beliefs threatening; in every culture, those who love freedom for themselves must ask how much they are willing to tolerate freedom for others.

That is what we saw play out the last two weeks, as a crude and disgusting video sparked outrage throughout the Muslim world. I have made it clear that the United States government had nothing to do with this video, and I believe its message must be rejected by all who respect our common humanity. It is an insult not only to Muslims, but to America as well ? for as the city outside these walls makes clear, we are a country that has welcomed people of every race and religion. We are home to Muslims who worship across our country. We not only respect the freedom of religion ? we have laws that protect individuals from being harmed because of how they look or what they believe. We understand why people take offense to this video because millions of our citizens are among them.

I know there are some who ask why we don?t just ban such a video. The answer is enshrined in our laws: our Constitution protects the right to practice free speech. Here in the United States, countless publications provoke offense. Like me, the majority of Americans are Christian, and yet we do not ban blasphemy against our most sacred beliefs. Moreover, as President of our country, and Commander-in-Chief of our military, I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day, and I will always defend their right to do so. Americans have fought and died around the globe to protect the right of all people to express their views ? even views that we disagree with.

We do so not because we support hateful speech, but because our Founders understood that without such protections, the capacity of each individual to express their own views, and practice their own faith, may be threatened. We do so because in a diverse society, efforts to restrict speech can become a tool to silence critics, or oppress minorities. We do so because given the power of faith in our lives, and the passion that religious differences can inflame, the strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression, it is more speech ? the voices of tolerance that rally against bigotry and blasphemy, and lift up the values of understanding and mutual respect.

I know that not all countries in this body share this understanding of the protection of free speech. Yet in 2012, at a time when anyone with a cell phone can spread offensive views around the world with the click of a button, the notion that we can control the flow of information is obsolete. The question, then, is how we respond. And on this we must agree: there is no speech that justifies mindless violence.

There are no words that excuse the killing of innocents. There is no video that justifies an attack on an Embassy. There is no slander that provides an excuse for people to burn a restaurant in Lebanon, or destroy a school in Tunis, or cause death and destruction in Pakistan.

More broadly, the events of the last two weeks speak to the need for all of us to address honestly the tensions between the West and an Arab World moving to democracy. Just as we cannot solve every problem in the world, the United States has not, and will not, seek to dictate the outcome of democratic transitions abroad, and we do not expect other nations to agree with us on every issue. Nor do we assume that the violence of the past weeks, or the hateful speech by some individuals, represents the views of the overwhelming majority of Muslims? any more than the views of the people who produced this video represent those of Americans.

However, I do believe that it is the obligation of all leaders, in all countries, to speak out forcefully against violence and extremism. It is time to marginalize those who ? even when not resorting to violence ? use hatred of America, or the West, or Israel as a central principle of politics. For that only gives cover, and sometimes makes excuses, for those who resort to violence.

That brand of politics ? one that pits East against West; South against North; Muslim against Christian, Hindu, and Jew ? cannot deliver the promise of freedom. To the youth, it offers only false hope. Burning an American flag will do nothing to educate a child. Smashing apart a restaurant will not fill an empty stomach. Attacking an Embassy won?t create a single job. That brand of politics only makes it harder to achieve what we must do together: educating our children and creating the opportunities they deserve; protecting human rights, and extending democracy?s promise.

Understand that America will never retreat from the world. We will bring justice to those who harm our citizens and our friends. We will stand with our allies and are willing to partner with countries to deepen ties of trade and investment; science and technology; energy and development ? efforts that can spark economic growth for all of our people, and stabilize democratic change. But such efforts depend upon a spirit of mutual interest and mutual respect. No government or company; no school or NGO will be confident working in a country where its people are endangered. For partnership to be effective, our citizens must be secure and our efforts must be welcomed.

A politics based only on anger ?one based on dividing the world between us and them ? not only sets back international cooperation, it ultimately undermines those who tolerate it. All of us have an interest in standing up to these forces. Let us remember that Muslims have suffered the most at the hands of extremism. On the same day our civilians were killed in Benghazi, a Turkish police officer was murdered in Istanbul only days before his wedding; more than ten Yemenis were killed in a car bomb in Sana?a; and several Afghan children were mourned by their parents just days after they were killed by a suicide bomber in Kabul.

The impulse towards intolerance and violence may initially be focused on the West, but over time it cannot be contained. The same impulses toward extremism are used to justify war between Sunnis and Shia, between tribes and clans. It leads not to strength and prosperity but to chaos. In less than two years, we have seen largely peaceful protests bring more change to Muslim-majority countries than a decade of violence. Extremists understand this. And because they have nothing to offer to improve the lives of people, violence is their only way to stay relevant. They do not build, they only destroy.

It is time to leave the call of violence and the politics of division behind. On so many issues, we face a choice between the promise of the future, or the prisons of the past. We cannot afford to get it wrong. We must seize this moment. And America stands ready to work with all who are willing to embrace a better future.

The future must not belong to those who target Coptic Christians in Egypt ? it must be claimed by those in Tahrir Square who chanted ?Muslims, Christians, we are one.? The future must not belong to those who bully women ? it must be shaped by girls who go to school, and those who stand for a world where our daughters can live their dreams just like our sons. The future must not belong to those corrupt few who steal a country?s resources ? it must be won by the students and entrepreneurs; workers and business owners who seek a broader prosperity for all people. Those are the men and women that America stands with; theirs is the vision we will support.

The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. Yet to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see when the image of Jesus Christ is desecrated, churches are destroyed, or the Holocaust is denied. Let us condemn incitement against Sufi Muslims, and Shiite pilgrims. It is time to heed the words of Gandhi: ?Intolerance is itself a form of violence and an obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit.? Together, we must work towards a world where we are strengthened by our differences, and not defined by them. That is what America embodies, and that is the vision we will support.

Among Israelis and Palestinians, the future must not belong to those who turn their backs on the prospect of peace. Let us leave behind those who thrive on conflict, and those who reject the right of Israel to exist. The road is hard but the destination is clear ? a secure, Jewish state of Israel; and an independent, prosperous Palestine. Understanding that such a peace must come through a just agreement between the parties, America will walk alongside all who are prepared to make that journey.

In Syria, the future must not belong to a dictator who massacres his people. If there is a cause that cries out for protest in the world today, it is a regime that tortures children and shoots rockets at apartment buildings. And we must remain engaged to assure that what began with citizens demanding their rights does not end in a cycle of sectarian violence.

Together, we must stand with those Syrians who believe in a different vision ? a Syria that is united and inclusive; where children don?t need to fear their own government, and all Syrians have a say in how they are governed ? Sunnis and Alawites; Kurds and Christians. That is what America stands for; that is the outcome that we will work for ? with sanctions and consequences for those who persecute; and assistance and support for those who work for this common good. Because we believe that the Syrians who embrace this vision will have the strength and legitimacy to lead.

In Iran, we see where the path of a violent and unaccountable ideology leads. The Iranian people have a remarkable and ancient history, and many Iranians wish to enjoy peace and prosperity alongside their neighbors. But just as it restricts the rights of its own people, the Iranian government props up a dictator in Damascus and supports terrorist groups abroad. Time and again, it has failed to take the opportunity to demonstrate that its nuclear program is peaceful, and to meet its obligations to the United Nations.

Let me be clear: America wants to resolve this issue through diplomacy, and we believe that there is still time and space to do so. But that time is not unlimited. We respect the right of nations to access peaceful nuclear power, but one of the purposes of the United Nations is to see that we harness that power for peace. Make no mistake: a nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained. It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of Gulf nations, and the stability of the global economy. It risks triggering a nuclear-arms race in the region, and the unraveling of the non-proliferation treaty. That is why a coalition of countries is holding the Iranian government accountable. And that is why the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

We know from painful experience that the path to security and prosperity does not lie outside the boundaries of international law and respect for human rights. That is why this institution was established from the rubble of conflict; that is why liberty triumphed over tyranny in the Cold War; and that is the lesson of the last two decades as well. History shows that peace and progress come to those who make the right choices.

Nations in every part of the world have travelled this hard path. Europe - the bloodiest battlefield of the 20th century ? is united, free and at peace. From Brazil to South Africa; from Turkey to South Korea; from India to Indonesia; people of different races, religions, and traditions have lifted millions out of poverty, while respecting the rights of their citizens and meeting their responsibilities as nations.

And it is because of the progress I?ve witnessed that after nearly four years as President, I am hopeful about the world we live in. The war in Iraq is over, and our troops have come home. We have begun a transition in Afghanistan, and America and our allies will end our war on schedule in 2014. Al Qaeda has been weakened and Osama bin Laden is no more. Nations have come together to lock down nuclear materials, and America and Russia are reducing our arsenals. I?ve seen hard choices made ? from Naypyidaw to Cairo to Abidjan ? to put more power in the hands of citizens.

At a time of economic challenge, the world has come together to broaden prosperity. Through the G-20, we have partnered with emerging countries to keep the world on the path of recovery. America has pursued a development agenda that fuels growth and breaks dependency, and worked with African leaders to help them feed their nations. New partnerships have been forged to combat corruption and promote government that is open and transparent. New commitments have been made through the Equal Futures Partnership to ensure that women and girls can fully participate in politics and pursue opportunity. And later today, I will discuss our efforts to combat the scourge of human trafficking.

But what gives me the most hope is not the actions of leaders ? it is the people I?ve seen. The American troops who have risked their lives and sacrificed their limbs for strangers half a world away. The students in Jakarta and Seoul who are eager to use their knowledge to benefit humankind. The faces in a square in Prague or a parliament in Ghana who see democracy giving voice to their aspirations. The young people in the favelas of Rio and the schools of Mumbai whose eyes shine with promise. These men, women and children of every race and every faith remind me that for every angry mob that gets shown on television, there are billions around the globe who share similar hopes and dreams. They tell us that there is a common heartbeat to humanity.

So much attention in our world turns to what divides us. That?s what we see on the news, and that consumes our political debates. But when you strip that all away, people everywhere long for the freedom to determine their destiny; the dignity that comes with work; the comfort that comes from faith; and the justice that exists when governments serve their people ? and not the other way around.

The United States of America will always stand up for these aspirations, for our own people, and all across the world. That was our founding purpose. That is what our history shows. And that is what Chris Stevens worked for throughout his life.

And today I promise you this ? long after these killers are brought to justice, Chris Stevens? legacy will live on in the lives he touched. In the tens of thousands who marched against violence through the streets of Benghazi; in the Libyans who changed their Facebook photo to one of Chris; in the sign that read, simply, ?Chris Stevens was a friend to all Libyans.?

They should give us hope. They should remind us that so long as we work for it justice will be done; that history is on our side; and that a rising tide of liberty will never be reversed. Thank you.

Loud music, earphones lead to hearing loss | Sify Health

International Week of the Deaf is observed from 24 to 30 September and we have some insight on hearing impairment in India.

It?s an all too familiar sight these days ? people, mostly youngsters, with earphones on, listening to music on their i-Pods or mobile phones. The constant exposure to high decibel sounds, however, may be doing more harm than good and can even lead progressively to hearing impairment, doctors warn.

What?s more, it may be a few years until you realise the hearing loss since it grows over a period of time.

?Listening to loud music over long durations on your i-Pod or mobile phone can lead to hearing loss. It is a serious issue because it?s progressive and it may be a few years before you realise the effect,? Manuj Agarwal, senior audiologist with Amplifon India, a hearing aid company, said.

?Moreover, people adapt to such kind of loss over a period of time; so you don?t realise immediately, until it becomes obvious,? he added.

Roughly seven percent of Indians suffer from some kind of hearing impairment.

Priyanka Madhok, consultant in the audiology and speech therapy department of Max Super Speciality hospital in Delhi, explained the science behind this ?rising trend? of music-induced hearing loss.

?In a normal conversation, we are exposed to 40-50 decibel sound, which has no harmful effect. However, if the sound level goes beyond 80 decibels for a constant period of even two-three hours, the hearing ability will drop,? Madhok said.

Added Agarwal: ?If the magnitude of sound is high, then even a few hours of exposure is enough to cause you harm. Ninety decibels for four hours is risky and so is two hours of 100 decibel sound. In airports, the magnitude of sound is 120 decibels; so people working there have to wear ear protection devices.?

One of Madhok?s patients is a disc jockey and is regularly exposed to loud music for long hours.

?He came to me with the complaint that he hears a buzzing sound in his ears in quiet surroundings. This buzz or ring in the ear is called Tinnitus. So I asked him to go for a hearing test, which came out normal. But when he went for an extended test, in high frequency, it was found that there was a drop in hearing, which meant that he had some loss,? Madhok said.

?Fortunately, it was a temporary hearing shift and I introduced him to therapy. After six months, his hearing has improved. Music is his livelihood; so now he is more careful,? she added.

Talking about the possibility of reversing hearing loss, Madhok said: ?If a person is exposed to industry noise, high frequency sounds, for 30 years, then there is a possibility of nerve damage and that cannot be repaired.?

?But if a person is exposed to loud music, like a DJ, for say, 10 years, and goes for regular check-ups, and then complains of hearing loss, then that is something that can be managed. So it really depends on the extent of damage,? she added.

While music-induced hearing loss is a major concern, industry workers, engineers, pilots, those who work in airports and DJs, among others, are exposed to threats of hearing impairment every day, thanks to their profession.

?Therefore, earplugs in such professions are a must. But even then, I would advice such people, and others, to go for regular check-ups,? Sameer Jain, an audiologist in Delhi, advised.

Considering the initial dormant nature of the problem, doctors advise one to be on the lookout for warning signs of possible hearing impairment.

?Do you have a ringing or buzzing sound in your ears in quiet surroundings and it disappears after some time? Do you have to concentrate hard to catch words in a conversation? In a meeting, or while with friends in a public place, do you find it hard to hear full sentences? Your replies could indicate if you need to see a doctor,? Agarwal said.

?And hearing impairment has nothing to do with age; so don?t hesitate to seek help if you feel the need,? Jain added.

So, the next time you turn up the volume of your i-Pod to blank out the surrounding noises, think again ? you may be blanking out something much more vital.

Greyhound - Eric - Large - Adult - Male - Dog - Tampa Bay Classifieds

Greyhound - Eric - Large - Adult - Male - Dog

Registered Name: Far Site Better Call Name: Eric Birth Date: July 27, 2007 Color: Brindle Pedigree: (Deerfield Site--Exceptional Bid). Eric is one greyhound who loves people and enjoys nothing more than being with you. He is a happy, active (for a greyhound), playful boy who would love to have a family of his own. Eric is an average size greyhound boy at 72 lbs. He is easy to handle and will stand quietly for a bath or to have his nails trimmed. He is so excited about being out of the kennel that everything to him is a new adventure. He seems so happy to just gallop around in the yard and search for squirrels or watch what is going on. He rides well in a car, van, or SUV and already is learning to walk fairly well on a leash. He does very well using a gentle leader or "halti", both of which are available at most pet stores. If a dog wants to pull a little on a leash, we always recommend a gentle leader or halti, as they are quite gentle for the dog. The other advantage is that with consistent use for a couple of weeks, the dog will train themselves to walk nicely by your side on a regular collar and leash. We do not recommend that you use chain collars on greyhounds. When we tested Eric with cats, he seemed a little too interested in chasing the cat, but may be able to live with a bossy, "Ninja" type cat. He does very well with other dogs, and of course, loves to be around people. In fact, it you stand near him for very long, Eric will lean against you. He will also try to climb into your lap if you let him as he has no concept of his size. If you would let him lie next to you on the sofa, he would be very happy. Eric is a son of the great Irish champion greyhound, Deerfield Site, which is where his racing name "Far Site Better" comes from. As a racer, Eric was truly exceptional. He competed in a total of 237 races, all at Derby Lane Greyhound Track in St. Petersburg. He raced from February 2009 until August of this year, winning 40 times and placing second another 30 times. Eric had very good care at his racing kennel, and after all of those races, hec came to us in excellent condition with no racing injuries. After such an exemplary career on the track, Eric deserves a wonderful retirement with a family of his own, a soft bed, an air conditioned house, and of course, plenty of treats. We have just picked up Eric, so he has been in foster care for a very short period of time. We will have more information in a few days on how Eric is adapting to life in a home, so please check back for updates. Eric's $250 adoption donation includes his neuter, teeth cleaning, all vaccines, Bordetella (to protect against kennel cough), microchip, leash and collar, adoption guide, grooming mitt, and stuffie toy. Your adoption donation helps us to defray some of the veterinary and care costs we have incurred for Eric. For more information or to meet Eric, please contact us at 813/272-2332 or e-mail at [email removed].

Vogue publisher to open cafe outpost in Dubai

(AP) ? Vogue's fashion-loving fans will soon have a chance to drink in the magazine's aura at a new cafe in Dubai.

The glossy's global publisher, Conde Nast International, said Tuesday that it expects to open the Vogue Cafe in the glitzy Gulf emirate's largest shopping mall by the end of the year.

It will be the company's first such cafe in the Middle East, where luxury fashion labels such as Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Chanel are extremely popular among the region's well-heeled shoppers.

"The expatriate community and the local Emirati community are very conscious of brands," said Stuart Nielsen, director of Conde Nast's restaurant division. "People always love to eat and drink, and we see an opportunity because they love fashion."

Vogue will join a fast-growing list of American brands expanding their reach to Dubai, a cosmopolitan city-state in the Persian Gulf and trade a hub where guest workers from around the world far outnumber citizens. The emirate is home to the only Bloomingdale's department store outside the United States, and recently received its first branches of IHOP and the Cheesecake Factory.

The cafe will be surrounded by high-end fashion and shoe stores in Dubai Mall.

The sprawling shopping center is located at the foot of the world's tallest skyscraper, the 2,717 foot-tall (828 meter) Burj Khalifa, which is already home to a swanky hotel and several restaurants designed by Giorgio Armani. There is also a cafe, linked to the Italian designer inside the mall.

Contemporary European food will be on the Vogue Cafe menu, but no alcohol will be served, Nielsen said.

However, cocktails and other alcoholic beverages, will be available at another Conde Nast outlet designed to cater to male fans of its magazines. The publisher expects to open a bar based around GQ magazine in one of Dubai's high-end hotels next year.

English-language versions of both magazines are available in the Middle East, though Conde Nast does not publish local versions of either.

The publisher is partnering with a Dubai-based firm called Inspired Group on the cafe and the bar. Nielsen declined to discuss the financial terms of the partnership.

Conde Nast opened a similar cafe in Moscow in 2004. It has since opened two other establishments tied to its brands in the Russian capital.

The company is planning to open another GQ Bar in Istanbul this year, and has signed deals for Conde Nast establishments in Bangkok and Singapore, Nielsen said. It is also considering opening cafes in Mideast cities closer to Dubai, including Kuwait City and the Emirati capital, Abu Dhabi.

Besides Vogue and GQ, Conde Nast's titles include The New Yorker, Wired and Vanity Fair.

Conde Nast International, which publishes international versions of the American magazines, set up its restaurant division in 2010. It publishes more than 120 magazines in 24 international markets.

(AP) ? Syrian opposition figures who reject foreign intervention in Syria's 18-month conflict called for the ouster of President Bashar Assad at a rare meeting Sunday in the nation's capital. The gathering was tolerated by the regime in an apparent attempt to lend credibility to its claims that it remains open to political reform despite its bloody crackdown on dissent.

A senior former Assad ally, meanwhile, said Iran is providing massive support for the embattled Syrian regime.

"Iranians are active in leading positions in the military," former Syrian Prime Minister Riad Hijab, who defected to the opposition last month, told the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. "We're not only talking about military aid, but also logistical and economic support" by Iran.

Earlier this month, the top commander of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard said the elite unit has high-level advisers in Syria. Iran is also believed to be sending weapons to Syria.

In recent weeks, Assad's military has escalated airstrikes and shelling of civilian areas to put down an uprising that began in March 2011 with peaceful protests but has since devolved into a civil war. Activists say close to 30,000 people have been killed.

Sunday's opposition conference was attended by diplomats from Iran, Russia and China, Assad's main allies. It was likely to be viewed as likely to be viewed as a cosmetic gesture by Syrian rebels and their many backers in the international community.

The loose network of Syrian rebel groups and the political opposition outside Syria believe Assad cannot be trusted to negotiate reform or a peaceful transfer of power, and call for foreign military intervention to break the stalemate in the conflict.

The United States and its allies have refrained from such action, partly because of international divisions over Syria and fears of a wider conflict. The opposition figures who met in Damascus are open to the idea of a political settlement, even though the conflict so far has eluded all attempts at mediation.

Assad's government tightly restricts criticism in areas it controls, and security was tight for Sunday's one-day conference at a Damascus hotel, attended by dozens of people. Streets leading to the hotel were blocked off, plainclothes security agents patrolled the perimeter and participants passed through security checks.

A bomb hidden in a black bag exploded on a footbridge in downtown Damascus, close to the Four Seasons hotel, about a kilometer (under a mile) from where Sunday's opposition conference was held. Two people suffered slight injuries, witnesses said.

Sunday's meeting was organized by the National Coordination Body for Democratic Change in Syria, or NCB, an umbrella for 16 opposition groups with roots in the country.

On Thursday, two senior NCB leaders disappeared after landing at Damascus International Airport, along with a friend who was to pick them up, and the NCB has blamed the regime for the disappearance. The government claimed the three were kidnapped by "terrorist groups," a phrase it uses for rebels.

Despite the incident, the group said participants agreed on the idea of "overthrowing the regime with all its symbols" while emphasizing the need for "peaceful struggle to achieve the goals of the revolution."

"It's our right to meet here in the capital to express our views without being subject to dictates and pressures or to be forced to make concessions," said the NCB's head, Hassan Abdul-Azim, who spent long years in Syrian prisons for his opposition role.

The strong language may be aimed at gaining credibility among Syrians who despise the regime but are weary of civil war.

NCB leaders, most of them traditional leftists, accuse the rebels and the Syrian National Council, a political opposition group based outside Syria, of being beholden to Turkey, which shelters defected Syrian generals and opposition figures, as well as Gulf Arab countries that support the rebels.

The rebels, in turn, accuse the NCB of being cut off from grassroots opposition fighters on the ground. Many rebels look askance at any political plan short of Assad's immediate ouster, seeing it as a play for time.

Ausama Monajed, a Syrian National Council official in exile, said the NCB was letting itself be used for Syrian propaganda purposes.

"Obviously, the regime had a signal to send ... to show that they are open to political dialogue and to sitting with so-called reasonable people," Monajed said. He portrayed the NCB leaders as isolated and lacking support among Syrians.

The statement emerging from Sunday's conference called for an immediate ceasefire accompanied by the full withdrawal of the Syrian army from towns and cities and the release of all political detainees and kidnapped people. This would be followed by the start of negotiations between the opposition and representatives of the Syrian government on a peaceful transition of power, it added.

The scenario outlined by the participants is similar to a six-point peace plan proposed by the former international peace envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan. That plan ended with Annan quitting the post last month after his cease-fire failed to take hold as violence escalated across the country.

Haitham Manna, a Paris-based veteran dissident who heads the external branch of the NCB, said the Syrian uprising was launched from inside Syria and it was "only natural for us to speak on behalf of the revolution from inside Syria."

He said regime change in the country was inevitable.

"This regime is dead in the hearts and minds of all Syrians ... there must be negotiations on a peaceful transition of power," he said in a telephone interview.

The Russian ambassador in Damascus, Azmat Allah Kolmahmedov, praised the conference, calling it a "direct implementation of the process of reforms launched by the Syrian government, including the freedom of expression."
