Kazakhstan military plane crashes, killing 27

(AP) ? Kazakhstan's acting border service chief was among 27 people killed in a military plane crash Tuesday near a southern city, another blow to the agency after he was appointed in June to deal with the aftermath of a mass killing involving a conscript.

The Russian-made An-72 crashed at 1255 GMT (7:55 a.m. EST) about 20 kilometers (12 miles) away from the city of Shymkent near the border with Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan's Committee for National Security said in a statement.

The fatalities included a crew of seven and 20 border guards, including the acting head of the ex-Soviet nation's border protection service, Col. Turganbek Stambekov, the statement said.

Without specifying further details, authorities said an investigation was opened into the crash. No cause was given, but southern Kazakhstan over recent weeks has been buffeted by winds, heavy snows and low temperatures, causing widespread flight delays.

Stambekov was appointed acting head of the border service in June, after a mass killing of 14 frontier troops in a remote Kazakh outpost near China the month before. Vladislav Chelakh, a 20-year-old conscript, was sentenced earlier this month to life in prison after being found solely responsible for the killings.

The border service has come under close scrutiny in Kazakhstan since the killings, which many argued showed the lack of readiness and professionalism among serving troops. Legislation approved Thursday by the upper house of parliament and supported by Stambekov was designed to improve the process for selecting conscripts for the service.

The Kazakh-Uzbek border stretches 2,200 kilometers (1,350 miles) of Central Asian steppes and deserts.

What's on the table now in 'fiscal cliff' talks

Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, arrives for a closed-door meeting with House Republicans as he negotiates with President Obama to avert the fiscal cliff, at the Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

An update on the latest offers on the table in negotiations to avert a year-end avalanche of federal tax increases and spending cuts known as the "fiscal cliff":

___

INCOME TAXES

House Speaker John Boehner would allow income tax rates to rise for people making more than $1 million per year and would hold rates where they are for everyone making less. The top rate on income exceeding $1 million would go from 35 percent to 39.6 percent.

President Barack Obama would freeze income tax rates for taxpayers making $400,000 or less and raise them for people making more.

The two sides are moving closer together. Previously, the Republican House leader opposed allowing any tax rates to go up; Obama wanted higher taxes for individual income above $200,000, or $250,000 for couples.

___

PAYROLL TAX

Obama has dropped his proposal to extend a temporary cut in Social Security payroll taxes paid by 163 million workers. Republicans want that tax to go back up.

Raising the payroll tax by 2 percentage points to its old level would cost a worker making $50,000 a year another $1,000 ? or a little more than $19 per week ? during 2013.

___

SOCIAL SECURITY

Obama is offering to reduce cost-of-living increases for Social Security recipients. Republicans have been seeking this as a key to long-term deficit reduction. But many congressional Democrats oppose it.

Government pensions and veterans' benefits would also get smaller cost-of-living increases.

In addition, taxpayers, especially low- and middle-income families, would pay more because of changes in the way that tax brackets are adjusted for inflation.

___

MEDICARE

Obama continues to reject Republicans' plan to raise the eligibility age for Medicare from 65 to 67. Boehner now says raising the eligibility age is not essential to a deal.

Obama wants to limit cuts in Medicare and other health care programs to about $400 billion over 10 years; Republicans want to overhaul Medicare to save even more money.

___

DEBT LIMIT

Obama wants a deal that would raise the amount the government is allowed to borrow to cover the next two years, to avoid another debt showdown with Congress until after the 2014 midterm elections.

Previously, Obama had demanded permanent authority to increase the debt ceiling without congressional approval. Republicans want Congress to be part of the decision-making process so they can demand budget-cutting in exchange for additional borrowing.

___

OTHER TAXES

Obama and Boehner both propose raising taxes on dividends and capital gains from 15 percent to 20 percent.

Both sides would reduce the number of deductions and exemptions that wealthy taxpayers can claim.

Obama would also let estate taxes revert to a 45 percent rate, after the first $3.5 million of an estate is exempted. Boehner backs a plan for a 35 percent rate and $5 million exemption.

Garmin names COO Pemble as CEO

(Reuters) - Navigation device maker Garmin Ltd named Chief Operating Officer Clifton Pemble as chief executive, succeeding co-founder Min Kao.

Pemble, who joined Garmin in 1989 as one of the company's first engineers and has been serving as COO since October 2007, will start in his new role from January 1.

Kao will assume the role of executive chairman, and continue to serve as the chairman of the board.

Garmin has been fighting sluggish demand for its GPS-enabled handheld navigation devices as smartphones loaded with free mapping apps invade its market, and it is betting on outdoor and fitness products to drive growth.

Brain imaging identifies bipolar disorder risk in adolescents

Dec. 17, 2012 ? Researchers from the Black Dog Institute and University of NSW have used brain imaging technology to show that young people with a known genetic risk of bipolar but no clinical signs of the condition have clear and quantifiable differences in brain activity when compared to controls.

"We found that the young people who had a parent or sibling with bipolar disorder had reduced brain responses to emotive faces, particularly a fearful face. This is an extremely promising breakthrough," says study leader Professor Philip Mitchell.

Affecting around 1 in 75 Australians, bipolar disorder involves extreme and often unpredictable fluctuations in mood. The mood swings and associated behaviours such as disinhibited behaviour, aggression and severe depression, have a significant impact on day-to-day life, careers and relationships. Bipolar has the highest suicide rate of all psychiatric disorders.

"We know that bipolar is primarily a biological illness with a strong genetic influence but triggers are yet to be understood. Being able to identify young people at risk will enable implementation of early intervention programs, giving them the best chance for a long and happy life," says Prof Mitchell.

Researchers used functional MRI to visualise brain activity when participants were shown pictures of happy, fearful or calm (neutral) human faces. Results showed that those with a genetic risk of bipolar displayed significantly reduced brain activity in a specific part of the brain known to regulate emotional responses.

"Our results show that bipolar disorder may be linked to a dysfunction in emotional regulation and this is something we will continue to explore," Professor Mitchell said.

"And we now have an extremely promising method of identifying children and young people at risk of bipolar disorder."

"We expect that early identification will significantly improve outcomes for people that go on to develop bipolar disorder, and possibly even prevent onset in some people."

Results are published this week in Biological Psychiatry and come from the NHMRC-funded 'Kids and Sibs study', the biggest research study in the world focusing on genetic and environmental aspects of bipolar disorder. Based at the Black Dog Institute, the trial is still recruiting.

Holiday gifts for pets follow high-tech trend | GoErie.com/Erie Times ...

A holiday present for Fido or Fluffy used to be an extra table scrap or a new squeeze toy. But as with gifts for their human counterparts, pet presents are becoming increasingly high-tech.

Like presents for young children who lack the dexterity to enjoy their new playthings, pet gifts are usually for the human who owns the pet.

Allie Robino of Austin, Texas, bought a dog treat maker for her 8-year-old rescue mutt Bentley, but it'll be her baking the biscuits -- not Bentley.

She bought PetSmart's Sunbeam Holiday Dog Treat Maker, essentially a waffle-maker with dog-bone molds, for Bentley when she took him to see Santa Claus at a Fort Worth pet store.

Even though he and her other dog, Shiner, will be the primary beneficiaries of the purchase, it's mostly a gift for Robino, who admits to having problems making things at home from scratch.

"A lot of these kinds of things end up being more complicated than the company promises, but this was super easy to use and the finished product looked great. Believe me, if it were possible to mess up, I would have messed up. I'm batting zero on Pinterest," she said, referring to the photo-sharing website beloved by amateur chefs and DIY-crafters.

Robino said it was the only time she has bought a gift for a pet that requires electricity, figuring that would put Bentley in a rarefied group of animals with high-tech presents.

?

Gadgets to grab

But there are actually plenty of gadgets in stores for animals, from the predictable (dog barking control, electronic self-cleaning cat litter boxes) to the surprising (exercise equipment, air conditioners for doghouses, pet air purifiers for human houses).

Technology is having an impact in every area of the pet world, including food, toys and care products, said Bob Vetere, president of the American Pet Products Association. He believes health care advances are moving the fastest.

"There are many advances on the pet rehabilitation side of health care that weren't even heard of a few years ago. There are also new advances in medication, treatments, and even testing and diagnostic areas.

For example, you can send off your pet's DNA to find out their breed and even give at-home tests to determine if certain diseases are present," he said.

Rehab equipment for pets, such as a dog-size treadmill, are no longer just for veterinarian clinics. Pet owners can buy the DogPacer's Minipacer treadmill ($479), which is made for dogs that weigh less than 55 pounds.

The original DogPacer treadmill will accommodate dogs up to 179 pounds and sells for $499 -- about the same price as human-size gym equipment.

For owners who exercise with their pets, the Sharper Image Pet-O-Meter Pet Pedometer ($19.99) counts steps, calculates distance and tracks the calorie intake of the human partner.

Meanwhile, the proliferation of apps for mobile devices offers clutter-free options for urban pet owners with little living space.

?

Track your pet

There are apps that track pets' whereabouts, like the GPS-based monthly service Tagg Pet Tracker, which can alert owners if a dog leaves a designated area or monitor a pet's physical activity.

For a simpler option, PetHub dog tags and collars make owners' contact information accessible through a scanning app on a mobile device, and animal shelter and GPS tracking services can be added.

Vetere says the best high-tech pet product is the microchip, which can be implanted in dogs, cats, birds, horses and other animals and will help reunite owners with lost pets.

"They are also widely used by industry professionals to track vaccinations, test results and other records. With GPS microchips now available as well, your missing pet can not only be tracked back to you, but you can now track them down and prove ownership if need be," he said.

Vetere predicts hot high-tech gifts this year will be microchip pet doors, which open using a chip implanted in the animal.

On Vetere's personal wishlist is "an automatic yard cleaner that would pick up after my dog, but I don't see how that would work without a robot," he said.

There's also an app for pets and owners who do volunteer work. For example, the $149.99 TouchChat alternative communication app lets people who have difficulty speaking play with a dog using voice commands.

Ricochet, a 4-year-old golden retriever from San Diego, works with people who have Down syndrome, who are autistic or who suffered strokes. Patients touch an iPad, prompting a synthesized voice to deliver a command like sit or turn around or down.

If the dog performs the command (and Ricochet always does), the patient can throw her a treat.

"No cues, inflection or interaction is needed from her handler. They can communicate with Ricochet directly, giving them a sense of independence, self-confidence and empowerment," said owner Judy Fridono.

Helping Hands Humane Society Kicks Off Christmas Festivities for ...

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Dogs and cats without a home are certainly not left out of Christmas festivities in Topeka.

The 3rd annual Howliday Adopt-a-thon kicked off at Helping Hands Humane Society on Rochester Road.

The shelter currently has 275 animals, 150 of which are up for adoption. They have dogs, cats and even two rats waiting for someone to take them home.

The goal is to find homes for at least 50 animals in two days. Last year, 65 animals were adopted through the Adopt-a-thon.

The event began with a Christmas dinner for the animals. Dogs munched on grilled hamburger patties and cats nibbled tuna, all sponsored by Carmona Comfort Air, Inc.

While the number of homeless animals is not up this year, Helping Hands stresses the importance of animals finding loving homes, and they hope the Christmas season reminds them of that.

Director of Adoptions Kathy Maxwell said the staff at Helping Hands wants as many animals to find a home, but for people to really think about it so they know what they're getting into.

School shooting: Screams 'over the intercom'

The shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School left the quiet community of Newtown, Conn., desperately trying to understand what happened. NBC's Kate Snow reports.

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Updated at 7:17 p.m. ET: The first that some pupils heard of the mass shootings Friday at their Connecticut elementary school was when gunshots and screams started coming over the intercom system, according to accounts from the scene.

Twenty children, all ages 5 to 10, and six adults were killed when a masked gunman opened fire inside Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., authorities said. The gunman was later found dead, a federal law enforcement official told NBC News.

26 dead after gunman assaults Connecticut elementary school

Connecticut school shooting is second worst in US history

The brother of a little girl who made it out of the school safely told NBC 30 of Connecticut that his sister told him that her class knew something was wrong "when she heard screams ? screams were coming over the intercom and the school went on lockdown."

NBCConnecticut: Newtown massacre: 28 dead

As the children were being led out of the school, state troopers and FBI agents told them to "hold hands and close their eyes until they got outside," said the unidentified young man, "so obviously what was in there must have been very gruesome."

"It truly is disgusting. It's sickening," he said. "Unfortunately, it's a growing trend in the United States."

The Rev. Al Sharpton talks with Kathy Sweeney, whose 8-year-old grandson was at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday.

"It was just horrific, and I just found out that a neighbor ... lost a child," said Kathy Sweeney, whose 8-year-old grandson attends the school.?

The boy is doing OK, she told MSNBC, but "I don't think it has set in yet."

Sweeney said her grandson told her that he and his classmates were in a computer room when they were told to duck under their computers.

"The PA system was on, and he said that he heard the gunshots," she said. "And then he said that they were supposed to close their eyes and they made their way up to the firehouse up the street."

See more video on the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary on NBCNews.com

Another pupil said everyone "went into a total panic" when they started hearing the gunshots.

"I was going back to my classroom," the boy said. "Then I heard something like a person was kicking on a door. Then I turned around and I saw smoke. ... Then a teacher pulled me into her room."

Asked what his reaction was amid the chaos, the boy said simply, "Whoa."

"You can never be prepared for this kind of incident," an emotional Gov. Dan Malloy said, his voice shaking as he recounted the assault on "a number of our citizens, beautiful children, as well as the adults whose responsibility is to educate those children."

Newtown police Lt. George Sinko called the shootings "definitely the worst thing we have experienced in this town," telling reporters it took officers just minutes after they arrived to recognize "what a horrific scene we had there."

The father of a pupil at Sandy Hook Elementary School describes his feelings upon hearing about the shootings. Then, Colin Goddard, a survivor of the Virginia Tech shootings, reacts to the interview, saying, "We are better than this."

'A powerless and terrifying experience'
The father of a Sandy Hook pupil said he had "no words that I could come up with that could come close to describing the sheer terror of hearing that your son is in a place, or your child is in a place, where there's been violence."

"You don't know the details of that violence. You don't know the condition of your child, and you can't do anything immediately to help them or protect them," he said.

"That is a powerless and terrifying experience."

Sarah W. Caron found a scene of chaos when she arrived to look for her young son. Teachers, police and parents, some of them crying, handed out water and tried to restore some order,?she wrote on iVillage.

"The moment I spotted Will's little brown haired head was one of such great relief. I hugged him. I hugged his teacher," Caron wrote. "But this isn't over. My family is safe ? thank God ? but our school community was shattered today by a horrific tragedy."

A staging area for parents to reunite with their children was set up at the neighboring firehouse.

An elementary school pupil recalls the terrifying moments following sounds of shots at her Connecticut school, saying, "Teachers told us to go in the corner, so we all huddled."

"I was in the gym, and I heard, like, seven loud booms, and the gym teachers told us to go in a corner, and we all huddled, and I kept hearing these booming noises," a young girl said.

"We all started ? well, we didn't scream ? we all started crying, so all the gym teachers told us to go into the office where no one could find us," the girl said.

"So then a police officer came in and told us to run outside, so we did, and we came in the firehouse and waited for our parents."

"The children who witnessed this are terribly traumatized," said Msgr. Robert Weiss of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, who went to the firehouse to offer support and comfort.?Weiss' church organized a memorial Mass for 7 p.m. ET.

"They're crying, they're trying to hold on to their parents, they want to go home, but they don't want to leave their friends," Weiss told MSNBC.

"Right now, I'm in a room full of parents who are waiting to hear what happened to their kids," he said. "The anxiety in this room is just overwhelming."

Andrew Mach and Vignesh Ramachandran of NBC News contributed to this report.

For up-to-the-minute coverage of the shootings at Sandy Creek Elementary School, stay with NBCNews.com and tune in to your local NBC station to watch tonight's special report on Dateline NBC.

UC Suspends Use of New Monogram | KQED News Fix

UC's short-lived visual- rebranding monogram

In a press release, Daniel Dooley, Senior Vice President for External Relations, says of the UC monogram that has received so much criticism over the past few days:

"(W)hile I believe the design element in question would win wide acceptance over time, it also is important that we listen to and respect what has been a significant negative response by students, alumni and other members of our community. Therefore, I have instructed the communications team to suspend further use of the monogram. For certain applications, this process could require a measure of time to complete. In due course, we will re-evaluate this element of the visual identity system. "

Gavin Newsom, for one, approves of the decision...

When the logo began to gain widespread notice this week, criticism was swift and brutal. Many thought that the image was not a fitting replacement for the stately university seal, even though the university said the two were meant to coexist. Other common complaints ranged from a perception that the monogram was too corporate-looking to a sense it was incomprehensible and just plain ugly. The university defended it for a few days, but has now relented.

Full announcement from UC:

Daniel M. Dooley, senior vice president for external relations at the University of California Office of the President, made the following statement today (Dec. 14):

A controversy has developed over an element of an integrated visual identity designed for use by the University of California's systemwide office. This controversy has created a major distraction for the UCOP External Relations Division as it pursues its broader mission: communicating to all Californians the vital contributions UC makes to the quality of their lives and the prosperity of the state.

The controversy has been fueled in large part by an unfortunate and false narrative, which framed the matter as an either-or choice between a venerated UC seal and a newly designed monogram.

In fact, the graphic element in question was never intended to replace the official seal that still graces diplomas and other appropriate documents. Rather, it was to provide a graphic cue to distinguish systemwide communications materials from those of individual campuses.

The monogram was only a piece of the visual identity system ? a new approach to typography, photography, colors and the like ? that was developed by UCOP design staff.

Since it debuted in the past year, this new "look" has served the UC system well, replacing what was a clutter of dated materials that varied from UCOP department to department. And it has received praise from an array of accomplished design experts not affiliated with the university.

And yet, while I believe the design element in question would win wide acceptance over time, it also is important that we listen to and respect what has been a significant negative response by students, alumni and other members of our community.

Therefore, I have instructed the communications team to suspend further use of the monogram. For certain applications, this process could require a measure of time to complete. In due course, we will re-evaluate this element of the visual identity system.

My hope going forward is that the passion exhibited for the traditional seal can be redirected toward a broader advocacy for the University of California. For it is only with robust support from the citizens of this state that the university will be able to serve future generations of Californians as well as it has those of the past.

Update 3 p.m.

Jason Simon, UC's director of marketing and communications, spoke with KQED's Joshua Johnson this morning about l'affaire monogram. Simon's group was in charge of the rebranding effort, and he spoke about the intention behind the change:

"The biggest thing we were trying to do is demonstrate the vibrancy that happens on our campuses every day. There are amazing things going on throughout the UC system. And a new monogram and a new symbol was meant to capture that forward looking spirit," he said.

Simon said the rebranding was put through a series of focus groups and online surveys. "And then beyond that, we took an even bigger risk and an even bigger challenge by having this in an open and public space, waiting for feedback for about nine months. And quite candidly, during that period, we did a lot of public and visible things with the mark and really only heard positive input until this past week or so."

"We had a million people or so visiting the site this year," he said.

Simon said the university finally decided to pull the plug on the logo because it had become "too much of a distraction."

"I do feel like we went through the right process, and we took the right steps to get input in..." Simon said. "My hope is that we can turn some of the feedback we got into a larger mission of making sure Californians understand the university."

Sales Online with Google and Bing |Business Marketing Power ...

?

PRLog (Press Release) - Dec. 13, 2012 - Google and Bing are two of the mostly used search engines on the web for Sales Online. Most online entrepreneurs rely on these search engines to generate sales online for their Internet business. Being able to land on the first pages of these search engines will allow you to reach your targeted traffic.

Here are some of the basic methods of how you can generate sales online with Google and Bing:

Generating Sales Online Using Google

Google is the number one search engine used by most Internet users in the world. For the past decade, many online entrepreneurs have relied on Google for making money and generating sales online for their businesses. Until now, a lot of these entrepreneurs compete with each other in gaining popularity in Google. Let?s discuss how this is possible.

You have two main ways of generating sales online with Google. First is on Google.com, and the second one is on people?s websites (which includes your site).

Millions of people search on Google every second. Among these millions, 96% of them will click on the first 3 results from the search engine. If those first three results are irrelevant to the person searching, he may check out the second page of the search result ? if you?re lucky. So the key is to get to the first pages of Google?s search results. How do you do that? By knowing how Google algorithms work. This will take some skills and a lot of patience on your part, but it is the best way of generating sales for your online business using Google.

The second is making use of other people?s websites, which involves Google AdSense. This is a program where website owners are allowed to place ads on their site pages. Each time a visitor on your site clicks on the ad, Google will get paid and they will then pay you revenue for each click the ads get. For this, they key is to draw as many visitors to your website. To do that, we go back to the first approach, which is becoming popular on Google.

If you get that right, you have great chances of boosting your online sales.

Generating Sales Online With Bing

Bing is a relatively new search engine owned by Microsoft. This search engine is still on its way of becoming the next most popular search engine on the Internet, but its users say it shows good results.

Again, there are two ways of generating sales using Bing. One is by driving more traffic into your website by being on the first pages of Bing search results or promoting your affiliates with Bing.

For the first strategy, you need to study how Bing SEO works. You can begin by learning the new ideas of this search engine; how it ranks the pages and how it shows results based on specific criteria. Apply these concepts into your website and that?s how you drive more visitors.

The second way of generating sales online with Bing is using the search engine?s Ad campaign. With this, you may be able to promote your advertisements and affiliate sites using their Ads program. The sales won?t boost that quickly, but as you continue implementing the program on your website, you will be able to drive your target audience into your ads.

There is one thing that makes Google and Bing the same when it comes to generating sales online: they both involve skills and hard work. Whichever of the two you will use, you have to know how their algorithms and concepts work so you can go with the flow.

If you think this is too much for you, there are SEO services you can hire that will take care of everything for you, while you sit back and watch your sales grow.

Los Angeles Bankruptcy Attorneys

The decision of whether or not to file for bankruptcy is not an easy one. Unfortunately, many make the decision because they are desperate. After sleepless nights of wondering how bills will get paid for the month, it often seems to be the only solution.

It is important to take a step back and consult with professionals before filing for bankruptcy. In California, consult with a few Los Angeles bankruptcy attorneys. Don?t automatically do what the first one tells you. In comparison, if you had a life threatening medical diagnosis you would get a second and probably even third opinion. This should be the same with bankruptcy. It is also worth considering meeting with other finance professionals as well (financial counselor or accountant).

There are other possible solutions as well. Sit down and do a written budget. Be sure and account for every dollar of income. Everyone?s budget is different, but a popular budget is 60% to monthly expenses, 10% for entertainment, 10% to savings, and 20% for debt. If you are deep in debt, consider saving a $1000 emergency fund and then put the 10% for savings toward debt. The entertainment budget should go to debt as well to pay it down faster. Often, by lowering lifestyle temporarily, debt repayment becomes manageable.

Another problem with paying down debt is not having enough income. There are several solutions for this as well. Consider getting a second job (you and/or your significant other) and/or selling items. Additionally, check into lowering or cutting out some of your regular expenses such as cable television, home phone, and insurances.

If you have a budget, a second job, have lowered bills, and still cannot pay off debts in the near future (no more than 3-5 years other than the mortgage), this might be the time to actually consider bankruptcy.

Los Angeles bankruptcy attorneys or attorneys in your area are the professionals who can tell you if you should start with a clean slate by filing for bankruptcy or if there are other solutions for you. Bankruptcy is nothing to be ashamed of if you have considered all of your options.

Aerobic exercise boosts brain power, review finds

Dec. 13, 2012 ? The physical benefits of regular exercise and remaining physically active, especially as we age, are well documented. However, it appears that it is not only the body which benefits from exercise, but the mind too. The evidence for this is published in a new review by Hayley Guiney and Liana Machado from the University of Otago, New Zealand, which focuses on the importance of physical activity in keeping and potentially improving cognitive function throughout life. Their review is published online in the Springer publication Psychonomic Bulletin & Review.

A certain amount of mental deterioration is expected with advancing age. However, this may not necessarily have to be the case as particular aspects of cognitive function such as task switching, selective attention and working memory among others, all appear to benefit from aerobic exercise. Studies in older adults reviewed by the authors consistently found that fitter individuals scored better in mental tests than their unfit peers. In addition, intervention studies found scores in mental tests improved in participants who were assigned to an aerobic exercise regimen compared to those assigned to stretch and tone classes.

Interestingly, these results were not replicated in children or young adults. The one area where physical fitness or regular exercise was found to have an effect on cognitive function in these age groups was for memory tasks. Both the updating of working memory and the volume of information which could be held was better in fitter individuals or those put on an aerobic exercise regime. The authors comment that despite physical fitness not affecting all areas of cognitive function in younger people, evidence is mounting that just because they are in their prime developmentally does not mean that they cannot benefit from regular exercise.

In older generations, the evidence for improvement in cognitive function is insurmountable. The types of tests of cognitive function reviewed here are important in showing that exercise may attenuate age-related decline for specific tasks. For example, it has been found to positively affect mental tasks relating to activities such as driving, an activity where age is often seen as a limiting factor.

The authors conclude that engagement in exercise can provide a simple means for people to optimize their cognitive function. They add that more research into the effects of exercise on young adults and children is required. However, they say that "the indications reported thus far -- that regular exercise can benefit brains even when they are in their prime developmentally -- warrant more rigorous investigation, particularly in the context of society becoming increasingly sedentary."

Man of Steel gets second teaser trailer

After successfully rebooting Batman under Christopher Nolan, Warner Brothers and DC Comics are trying to do the same to Superman, with Nolan serving as producer, and Zak Snyder of Watchmen and 300 as director. So, Dark Knight, here's your Man of Steel.

Right up front, I miss the John Williams music. It's like seeing Star Wars or Bond without their themes. I'm also concerned about some of the scenes in the trailer. Hopefully they'll make more sense when in context. But it does look like Snyder's iconic style meshes well with Superman's iconic look. He's the first modern superhero, and he had the first successful modern superhero movie. He's a tough character to write well, however.

Nolan started strong with Batman Begins, and created some of the best Batman moments committed to film, but his endings were terrible, he missed key parts of the Batman character, and in Dark Knight Rises, succumbed to a lot of bloat and bad choices. The 300 was Frank Miller's comic shot for shot, and Watchman was quite a achievement, given the scope of Alan Moore's original work, but the fight scenes verged on silly and the wisely-altered ending never quite gelled. Hopefully the pairing will bring out the best of both of their approaches.

No spoilers here, but if you want to discuss the trailer and the upcoming movies, jump into our movies forum.

Man of Steel comes out next year, but there's a ton Superman for you to enjoy on your iPhone or iPad in the meantime, including the original movies, Bryan Singer's beautiful but misguided previous attempt at a reboot, and some amazing stuff from the folks at Warner Animation. (Here's why: deadly John Byrne Luthor > comedic Donner Luthor.)

I particularly recommend the original Donner movie (Superman: The Movie), All Star Superman (based on the Grant Morrison comic), and Superman (the animated series), and, of course, Superman: The Fleischer Cartoons.

(AP) ? British astronomer and broadcaster Patrick Moore died Sunday, according to friends and colleagues. He was 89.

He died at his home in the coastal town of Selsey in southern England, according to a statement released Sunday. No specific cause of death was given, but he had heart problems and been confined to a wheelchair.

Moore was well known for his long-running BBC television show "The Sky at Night," which was credited for popularizing astronomy with generations of Britons. He had presented the show for more than half a century.

The statement said he was briefly hospitalized last week when it was determined no more treatment would help him. Instead, his wish to spend his final days at home were honored.

"Over the past few years, Patrick, an inspiration to generations of astronomers, fought his way back from many serious spells of illness and continued to work and write at a great rate, but this time his body was too weak to overcome the infection which set in a few weeks ago," the statement said.

It was signed by various staff members and friends, including Queen guitarist Brian May. May said Moore was irreplaceable and had stirred millions through his broadcasts.

"Patrick will be mourned by the many to whom he was a caring uncle, and by all who loved the delightful wit and clarity of his writings, or enjoyed his fearlessly eccentric persona in public life," May said.

In its obituary, the Daily Telegraph reported that Moore believed he was the only person to have met the first man to fly, Orville Wright, as well as the first man in space, Russian Yuri Gagarin, and the first man on the moon, the late Neil Armstrong.

Moore, who received a knighthood in 2001, had recently celebrated the 55th anniversary of his program. He only missed one episode, because of an illness caused by food poisoning. He was known for his trademark monocle and his occasional xylophone performances and his frequently professed love of cats.

He wrote dozens of books using a 1908 typewriter he received as a gift when he was 8.

Moore had long expressed an interest in traveling into space, but said he wasn't medically fit to do so ? he said he was so large that a special rocket would be needed.

How serious is RGIII's knee sprain? | NJ.com

The Washington Redskins were lucky to squeak a win after what can potentially be a season ending knee injury for Robert Griffin III. If reports are true that the Griffin's knee is a minor sprain and he can continue to play, the Washington Redskins (and the entire NFL) are not only lucky, they just won the Mega Millions Power Ball Lottery.

The knee joint is probably the simplest joint in the body. It performs two motions. It flexes and it extends. That's it! From the looks of the varus strain (an abnormal inward bend) of Griffin's knee during the tackle, I'd be shocked if the reports that the injury to RG3 is only a minor sprain are true.

The knee can only handle a small amount of varus stress until the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) stretches and then rips off the bone. With that being said, there are three grades of sprains in the knee. Grade 1 means a ligament has been slightly stretched. Grade 2 means a ligament is stretched to the point it is loose (usually referred to as a partial tear). A grade 3 sprain is defined as a complete tear of a ligament. Preliminary reports are that RG3 has sprained his knee, however, what is the grade of the sprain? This can determine the fate of the Redskin's season.

I have heard commentators such as Jon Gruden mention Griffin needs to be careful when he runs the ball to prevent a catastrophic injury. RG3 has been the toast of the NFL, I would hate to see his season end early. However, we have now witnessed two horrific hits. The concussion causing hit in the beginning of the season, and now a potential season ending knee injury.

Not often do we get to watch a rookie QB tear up the entire NFL, let's hope this injury is in fact a minor injury.

Possible clue to children's early antisocial behavior

Dec. 10, 2012 ? Both nature and nurture appear to be significant factors in early antisocial behaviors of adopted children, a Wayne State University researcher believes.

Christopher Trentacosta, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, recently examined data from 361 linked triads (birth mother, adoptive parents, adopted child) in order to assess externalizing behavioral problems such as aggression and defiance when children were 18, 27 and 54 months of age.

The triads were part of the Early Growth and Development Study (EGDS), a nationwide, prospective study of birth parents and adoptive families that is supported by grants from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute of Mental Health -- all part of the National Institutes of Health -- to Trentacosta's colleagues at the Oregon Social Learning Center and the Pennsylvania State University. The EGDS is aimed at investigating how families can help their children develop to their fullest potential.

In "Examining the Interplay of Birth Mothers' and Adoptive Parents' Antisocial Behavior in Predicting Growth in Externalizing Problems During Early Childhood," adoptive parents' antisocial behavior played an important role in the development of children's externalizing problems. His study was presented at the 2012 meeting of the Behavior Genetics Association in Edinburgh, Scotland.

That finding may not come as a surprise to researchers who have studied environmental precursors to such behavior. However, Trentacosta said a great deal of other research that examined sets of twins holds that genetic factors play a role as well.

Part of the problem with environmental studies, he said, is that the people providing the parenting are the same ones providing the genes. Using an adoption design, Trentacosta said, allows researchers to disentangle genetics from environmental influences by collecting data from both birth and adoptive parents.

His team found that adoptive parents reporting on their own antisocial behaviors predicted children's initial level of externalizing at 18 months, suggesting a direct environmental connection.

"That can be tricky, however, because it is those same parents reporting on the child's behavior," Trentacosta said, "so we aggregated both parents' reports to increase confidence somewhat. But even with the reporting limitation, there is something to be said for the environmental piece, at least initially."

His team's main finding is that there is an interaction between birth mother characteristics and adoptive parent antisocial behavior that is especially problematic for growth in externalizing behavior problems across early childhood. "Compared to birth mothers with lower levels of antisocial behavior, children of birth mothers with higher levels of antisocial behavior showed steep growth in externalizing problems when raised by adoptive parents with higher levels of antisocial behavior," Trentacosta said. "Both genetic characteristics and environment matter, but it's especially the combination of the two that seems to make a difference over time."

Trentacosta believes further study of the next age group, 54 to 72 months, may help to better determine the most salient predictors of externalizing behavior levels by the time children reach school age.

Previous research has shown that such behaviors typically decrease across the preschool years and as children transition to elementary school. A logical next step, he said, would be to assess behavior levels from the cohort used in his work as the children get older to obtain a more complete picture of how genetic and environmental considerations play out across development.

"Behaviors that start out at fairly normative levels but still more than most can cause problems for children as they get to school age," Trentacosta said. "For prevention purposes, it's helpful if we can identify these children earlier and possibly get extra help for these families."
