Buddha statue: Possibly fake, still from space

Researchers who reported that a potentially ancient Buddha statue is carved from a meteorite said they are not surprised that an expert in Buddhist history believes the statue to be a fake.

"Honestly, that is what we expected," said Elmar Buchner, who along with his colleague reported on the statue in September in the journal Meteoritics & Planetary Science. "We heard so many opinions from so many experts in art history and experts for Buddhism on the origins and the age of the statue prior to and after the publication."

The most public of these consultations is a new report from Achim Bayer, a Buddhism expert at Dongguk University in South Korea. In a report released online, Bayer writes that the features of the statue are "pseudo-Tibetan" and are more likely to be a European reproduction dating from 1910 to 1970 than a true ancient carving dating back 1,000 years, as Buchner and his colleagues had estimated.

Bayer did not contest that the statue is a made of meteorite.

"The non-Asian features of the 'lama wearing trousers' should be immediately obvious to any scholar in the field," Bayer wrote, referring to the statue as a "lama" or guru. The shoes, pants and sleeves of the man's garments are all wrong for ancient Tibet, he wrote. The statue's hands, eyes and ears are also shaped unusually for Tibetan art, he said.

The statue was said to have come to Germany in the possession of a pre-World War II scientific expedition commissioned by the Nazi party. Bayer called that into question, too, saying there is no documentation of the statue's transfer and arguing that it is more likely a fake created in the 20th century for the antique or Nazi-memorabilia market.

"For us, Bayer's hypothesis is just one opinion," Buchner wrote in an email to LiveScience. "However, we cannot decide whether this hypothesis is valid or not because we are not the experts in art history, and we told the press that our assumptions are speculative, accordingly," wrote Buchner, who is a geologist.

The geochemical analysis of the meteorite is still sound, Buchner said. The team found that the material used to make the statue is a rare type of iron- and nickel-rich meteorite from a meteorite fall along the Siberian-Tibetan border. [ Top 5 Weirdest Meteorites ]

That cosmic origin brings up one more mystery in the tale of the controversial space Buddha.

"I think it is not convincing that anybody took a very precious meteorite to produce a reproduction for the local antique market!?" Buchner wrote.

Facebook partners with retailers to test "want" button

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc is testing a feature that lets users of the social network create "wishlists" of home furnishings, clothing and other retail products, laying the groundwork for what some believe could be an eventual push into e-commerce.

Facebook said it is working with seven retailers, including Pottery Barn and Victoria's Secret, to test the new feature that will allow certain users to flag images of desired products by clicking a special "want" button.

"People will be able to engage with these collections and share things they are interested in with their friends. People can click through and buy these items off of Facebook," Facebook said in a statement.

The feature, which Facebook has dubbed Collections, could help Facebook play a bigger role in the online commerce market by encouraging its 1 billion users to buy products for their friends and by sending shoppers directly to online stores.

A Facebook spokeswoman said the company does not receive a fee when someone purchases a wishlist item on Facebook from a retailer's site.

But Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said the new Collections feature could open up new sources of revenue for Facebook, whose stock has taken a drubbing as concerns about its long-term money-making prospects have mounted.

"E-commerce is one of the best ways to monetize the Internet," said Sebastian.

"Thinking about how large they are as a platform and how engaged people are, there are lots of levers they haven't pulled yet in terms of monetization," he said. In addition to potentially collecting a transaction fee for referring users to an e-commerce site, Sebastian said that retailers might also pay Facebook to promote products featured on users' wishlists, similar to the way the Facebook's current ads function.

Shares of Facebook, finished Monday's regular session down 2.4 percent at $20.40. Earlier on Monday, BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield downgraded Facebook to a "Sell" rating.

In a note to investors, Greenfield cited concerns about the company's advertising business, particularly Facebook's nascent efforts to expand the business onto the mobile devices that its users increasingly access the service from.

Facebook's new Collections feature will gradually be offered to 100 percent of its U.S. users, Facebook said.

Some users will see the "want" button as part of the test, while others will see a button inviting them to "collect" an item or to "like" an item.

Unlike Facebook's existing "like" button, the feature that Facebook is testing will showcase the "liked" item within a user's Timeline profile page.

Facebook is also testing the Collections feature with Neiman Marcus, Michael Kors, Smith Optics, Wayfair and Fab.com.

I'm Not Lowering My Standards on Marriage Just Because the World Is

Last week, an article in the New York Times, Till Death, or 20 Years, Do Us Part,?explores whether a 20 year contract should be considered for marriage. ?The author, Matt Richtel, ?got the idea from 5 year marriage contract proposal that was proposed, but not passed, by lawmakers in Mexico a year ago.

The basic premise is that divorce rates are high with marriages failing half of the time. So, why not give people an opportunity (or out) to reassess their commitment after 20 years of being together? ?In 20 years, a couple would have raised kids (if any) and then they could assess whether they want to continue on in the marriage.

Richtel asked several marriage and divorce experts about his 20 year marriage idea and surprisingly, many of them agreed that at a minimum that some type of marriage reform is needed. ?People are living longer; there are many negative influences as a result of technology; couples are not living close to their families and marriage support systems; gay marriage is now on the scene; and people are choosing to co-habitat. ?All of these factors, lead to the question: ?Is there another way to do this.?

Richtel wrote the following about what he learned from the experts and authors:

?BETWEEN Dr. Coontz and Dr. Rutter, I began to see the crystallization of alternatives. Dr. Coontz is talking about a new way of packaging the age-old solution of accepting and working through imperfect unions. Romance, hard hats and pickaxes, and compromise.

Dr. Rutter is talking about getting more real still. Eliminating the fantasy of marriage, or curtailing it sharply. On its face, it does sound like the most obvious side effect of acknowledging the reality that marriages often fail. But as I followed the logic, I found myself not wanting to.?

?My personal opinion about the 20 year marriage proposal is that it is not a good idea. ?My belief is that you go into marriage with the idea that divorce is not an option. ?And then you take on the mindset that you are going to work on and manage any problems that arise in your marriage. ?My fear is that if people have an option to get out in 20 years, then perhaps they will not totally put in the effort that it takes to work on their marriage.

We live in a world where almost anything is acceptable. If I followed the standards set by the world, then I would allow my young daughter to dress any way she wanted because that is what she sees even on some of the popular kid?s channels, to start dating boys at a young age because they do that on the shows too, and watch any amount of trash on?TV?because her friends are watching it too. ?But the standards set by this world, by television and by?celebrities?are not going to dictate how I parent. ?And they certainly are not going to dictate the standards for my marriage.

If anything, it should make you work that much harder to protect all that is good about the institution of marriage.

BMWK ? Checkout the article to see all of the input from Richtel and the experts that he interviewed. ?Let us know how you feel about a 20 year marriage proposal? Does the institution of marriage need to be reformed??

Men can get breast cancer | WPRI.com

BOSTON (AP) -- Gov. Deval Patrick wants Massachusetts men to know that they also can get breast cancer.

Men rarely get breast cancer, but those who do often don't survive as long as women, mainly because they don't even realize they can get it and are slow to recognize the warning signs.

A recent study found that men's breast tumors were larger at diagnosis, more advanced and more likely to have spread to other parts of the body.

Many men have no idea that they can get breast cancer, and some doctors are in the dark, too, dismissing symptoms that would be an automatic red flag in women.

Patrick is hoping to change that in Massachusetts beginning Monday, when he signs a bill designating the third week of October as Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week.

Touch Bionics releases new prosthetic fingers, flip the old ones the bird

The only upgrades available for our puny human hands are gaming controller calluses, but if you're sporting an i-LIMB digits hand prosthesis, you can now grab a set of improved fingers. Touch Bionics' "smaller, lighter and more anatomically accurate" appendages are now available worldwide, as well as a new wrist-band unit which houses all the necessary computing power and juice for their function. Best of all, these developments allow more people to adopt the tech than the previous generation, including those with more petite hands or finger amputations closer to the knuckle. We don't know how much it'll cost for a fresh set, but we'll let health agencies and insurance companies deal with that part. With these upgrades and RSL Steeper's latest offering, it won't be long before our flesh-based variants are meager in comparison.
