New Vinson App Offers A Vision of Mobile TV If It Was Crammed Into An iPad

Screen Shot 2013-02-25 at 09.08.58Remember "mobile TV", whatever that was? No we don't either, but that's not about to deter new startup Vinson which is launching their their new mobile OTT (Over The Top) TV app on iOS for broadcasters, content aggregators and content distributors at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Essentially this is watching live TV on a tablet, with the full TV guide, plus PVR/time-shifting, plus "social" features for shared watching experiences. They've basically crammed a vision of the future TV into an app, and it looks pretty good.

PFT: Giants coach Coughlin not planning retirement

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Carolina PanthersGetty Images

The Buccaneers want to try to keep defensive end Michael Bennett, and met with his agent yesterday at the NFL Scouting Combine about a new deal.

But they?re not going to use the franchise tag on him, and are prepared to move forward with Da?Quan Bowers if need be, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

?We?ve spoken internally as an organization with ownership, certainly with Greg [Schiano] and me, and we?re not going to use the franchise or transition tag on any player on our roster,?? general manager Mark Dominik said. ?We?re trying to meet with the agents of every single one of our free agents so they can understand the direction we?re thinking, where we?re heading. We?re still having negotiations or conversations with them. It?s hard to say whether they will be productive or not, but it?s certainly something we try to do is have meetings with the agents of our free agents and have meaningful dialogue.??

Bennett led the team with nine sacks last year, and will certainly find interest if he reaches the market.

But despite the fact Bowers faces gun charges after a recent arrest at New York?s LaGuardia Airport, the Bucs are confident the former second-round pick can become their top pass-rusher if Bennett leaves.

?Da?Quan is a guy I thought continued to accelerate his play throughout the end of the season,?? Dominik said. ?The more we can get him on the football field, I think the better we are as a football team. Certainly, that?s part of the thought process going forward with our entire football team, hopefully getting Adrian Clayborn back and 100 percent healthy and then be able to pair him with a guy like Da?Quan who we feel can be a premier left end in this league. That certainly has to be part of the entire picture we?re looking at, not only with free agency, but how we?re putting this thing together.??

Of course, suggesting that?s a subtle reminder that Bennett?s not irreplaceable, especially for a team with $30 million in cap space and possibly more on the way.

Vatican feuds, fiefdoms, betrayals await next pope

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? If evidence was ever needed that the next pope must urgently overhaul the powerful Vatican bureaucracy called the Curia, the scandal over Pope Benedict XVI's private papers is Exhibit A.

The pope's own butler stole sensitive internal letters to the pontiff and passed them off to a journalist, who then published them in a blockbuster book. The butler did it, he admitted himself, to expose the "evil and corruption" in the Vatican's frescoed halls that he believed was hidden from Benedict by those who were supposed to serve him.

And if that original sin weren't enough, the content of the leaks confirmed that the next pope has a very messy house to clean up. The letters and memos exposed petty wrangling, corruption and cronyism at the highest levels of the Catholic Church. The dirt ranged from the awarding of Vatican contracts to a plot, purportedly orchestrated by senior Vatican officials, to out a prominent Catholic newspaper editor as gay.

Ordinary Catholics might not think that dysfunction in the Apostolic Palace has any effect on their lives, but it does: The Curia makes decisions on everything from church closings to marriage annulments to the disciplining of pedophile priests. Papal politics plays into the prayers the faithful say at Mass since missal translations are decided by committee in Rome. Donations the faithful make each year for the pope are held by a Vatican bank whose lack of financial transparency fueled bitter internal debate.

And so after 35 years under two "scholar" popes who paid scant attention to the internal governance of the Catholic Church, a chorus is growing that the next pontiff must have a solid track record managing a complicated bureaucracy. Cardinals who will vote in next month's conclave are openly talking about the need for reform, particularly given the dysfunction exposed by the scandal.

"It has to be attended to," said Chicago Cardinal Francis George. With typical understatement, he called the leaks scandal "a novel event for us."

Cardinal Walter Kasper, a German who retired in 2010 as the head of the Vatican's ecumenical office, said the Curia must adapt itself to the 21st century.

"There needs to be more coordination between the offices, more collegiality and communication," he told Corriere della Sera. "Often the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing."

Sandro Magister, the Vatican analyst who most closely follows the comings, goings and internecine feuds of Vatican officials, said the "disaster" of governance began unfolding in the 1980s, in the early years of Pope John Paul II's pontificate.

"John Paul II was completely disinterested in the Curia; his vision was completely directed to the outside," Magister said in an interview. "He allowed a proliferation of feuds, small centers of power that fought among themselves with much ambition, careerism and betrayals."

"This accumulated and ruined it for the next pope," he said.

Benedict was well aware of the problems, having spent nearly a quarter-century in the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. But he never entered into the Vatican's political fray as a cardinal ? and as pope left it to his No. 2, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, to do the job.

"Some of his choices were shown to be counterproductive," Magister said. "Cardinal Bertone didn't produce the results that Benedict XVI had hoped for."

Bertone himself became a lightning rod for division within the Curia. A canonist, he had no diplomatic experience coming into the job, and the main battle lines drawn in the Curia today come down to his loyalists and those still loyal to his predecessor Cardinal Angelo Sodano. Taken as a whole, the leaked documents seemed aimed at undermining Bertone.

To be fair, the Vatican under Benedict made great strides on some internal governance fronts: the pope insisted on greater financial transparency, and the Vatican passed a key European anti-money laundering test last summer. He insisted on a Vatican trial, open to journalists, for the butler who betrayed him. And as cardinal, after priestly sex abuse cases bounced for years among Vatican offices, the former Joseph Ratzinger took them over himself in 2001.

But some analysts speculate that the revelations from the leaks at the very least accelerated Benedict's decision to resign. In early 2012, he appointed three trusted cardinals to investigate beyond the criminal case involving his butler. They interviewed widely inside the Curia and out and delivered their final report in December. Its contents are sealed, though speculation is rife that the cardinals minced no words in revealing the true nature of the Curia.

Benedict's biographer, Peter Seewald, asked Benedict in August how badly the scandal had affected him. He replied that he was not falling into "desperation or world-weariness," yet admitted the leaks scandal "is simply incomprehensible to me," according to a recent article Seewald penned for the German magazine Focus.

The Holy See's bureaucracy is organized as any government, though it most closely resembles a medieval court ? given that the pope is an absolute monarch, with full executive, legal and judicial powers.

There's a legal office, an economic affairs office and an office dedicated to the world's 400,000 priests. Three tribunals tend to ecclesiastical cases and a host of departments take up spiritual matters: making saints, keeping watch on doctrine and the newest office created by Benedict, spreading the faith.

John Paul's 1988 apostolic constitution "Pastor Bonus" sets out the competencies of the various congregations and councils, and they function more or less as independent fiefdoms, albeit in consultation with one another when the subject matter requires. In the end, though, the real power lies with two departments: the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the secretariat of state, which can block virtually any initiative of another office.

"Who is influential isn't so much dependent on what your office is or your title but whether you have access to the king, or in this case the pope," said the Rev. Thomas Reese, author of "Inside the Vatican," a bible of sorts for understanding the Vatican Curia.

The same could be said for any executive branch. But in the case of the Vatican, there's a difference.

"Obama can fire anybody he wants from his cabinet," Reese said. "When you make someone a bishop, you make him a bishop for life. When you make him a cardinal you make him a prince of the church. What do you do with a cardinal (who doesn't work out)? He can't go to K Street and get a job as a lobbyist."

Though increasingly international, the Curia is also a very Italian creature, which affects its priorities, weaknesses and style of governance. "Genealogy is important, who begat whom," noted one recently departed Vatican official, who spoke on condition of anonymity so as to not antagonize former colleagues.

The typical Italian way of getting things done via personal stamps of approval, or "raccomandanzione," guides introductions. The Italian way of persuasion, less overt power play than Machiavellian machinations, governs consensus-building and decision-making.

Italian commentator Massimo Franco recently concluded on the pages of Corriere della Sera that the Vatican bureaucracy today is simply "ungovernable."

Though it's open to interpretation, Benedict's final homily as pope could be read as a clear message to the cardinals who will choose his successor.

Two days after announcing he would resign, a weary Benedict told his flock gathered in St. Peter's Basilica for Ash Wednesday Mass to live their lives as Christians in order to show the true face of the church ? a church, he said, which is often "defiled."

"I think in particular about the attacks against the unity of the church, the divisions in the ecclesial body," he said. He told those gathered that "moving beyond individualisms and rivalries is a humble and precious sign for those who are far from the faith or indifferent to it."

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said it was wrong to interpret the pope's words as being directed at the Vatican Curia, saying the pope's message was intended as a call for unity among all Christians, a priority of his as pontiff.

"Differences and diversity of opinion are part of the normal dynamic of any institution or community," Lombardi said. He said the way the Vatican's governance problems are often described "do not correspond to reality."

Jimmy Fallon gets first PS4 hands-on, plays some Killzone: Shadow Fall (video)

Jimmy Fallon gets his hands on the PS4 for some Killzone Shadow Fall action video

First things first: We still haven't seen the PlayStation 4. That said, if you'd like to see someone other than a Sony rep or developer putting their hands all over that DualShock 4 with touchpad and share button -- we asked, but apparently network TV still trumps internet -- then say no more. Managing Director of Guerilla Games Hermen Hulst came by the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show with a prototype unit (not shown) loaded up with the Killzone: Shadow Fall demo we saw at the press conference. Jimmy and guest Anthony Anderson played a bit, with varying degrees of success and were predictably impressed by the new system, due out this fall. There's not a lot of new information to be had, unless you wanted to know what the ceilings in the game look like (clearly, Anderson prefers to play shooters inverted). Watch the video embedded after the break, we're going to doublecheck ?uestlove's Instagram to see if he got any backstage or setup shots of the system behind the curtain.

Source: NCAA says former coaches misled probe

Frank Haith is one of several coaches named or referenced in the NCAA probe of the Hurricanes program.

Pat Sullivan/AP

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- The NCAA believes former Miami assistant coaches Clint Hurtt, Aubrey Hill and Jorge Fernandez provided false or misleading information during the probe into the Hurricanes' athletic department.

The NCAA said all three violated "principles of ethical conduct" as part of the notice of allegations served against the Hurricanes, according to a person who spoke to The Associated Press Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the allegations have not been released publicly.

Hurtt and Hill were members of Miami's football staff. Fernandez worked on the men's basketball staff.

Several other coaches are named or referenced in the allegations, including Missouri basketball coach Frank Haith, who is alleged of failing "to promote an atmosphere for compliance." But only Hurtt, Hill and Fernandez are facing the ethical-conduct charge, commonly known as NCAA Rule 10.1.

Hurtt is currently on the staff at Louisville. Hill is not working as a coach at this time, and Fernandez spent last season as an assistant at Marshall, resigning last May.

The notice of allegations was delivered to Miami on Tuesday, and the university is facing the charge that it had a "lack of institutional control" - one of the worst things the NCAA can levy against a member school. The charge revolves around how the school allegedly failed to monitor conduct of Nevin Shapiro, a rogue booster and convicted felon who provided cash, gifts and other items to players on the football and men's basketball teams.

University President Donna Shalala said Tuesday night that the Hurricanes have suffered enough already through self-imposed sanctions. Through a university spokesman, she declined further comment Wednesday.

The NCAA said Hurtt and Hill committed the same violations, at least related to the ethical-conduct matter.

The sanctions portion of this saga could take several months. The NCAA has asked some of the people who are facing major charges to respond by May 20, which means that under ordinary circumstances a hearing before the Committee on Infractions would then take place, followed by the issuing of penalties even later.

The NCAA alleged both provided meals, transportation and lodging to either recruits, current players, or both in either 2008 or 2009. Both were interviewed by the NCAA during the course of its probe and allegedly denied providing those extra benefits, statements the NCAA said were contradicted in each case by what players told them separately.

Hurtt also took a $2,500 personal loan from Shapiro, which was repaid. The NCAA also believes he sent about 40 impermissible text messages to recruits, which typically is a secondary, or minor, violation.

Fernandez, the NCAA alleged, "knowingly provided extra benefits" in the form of an air ticket. The NCAA said Fernandez denied using air miles for the tickets for a men's basketball player and a high school coach, despite evidence to the contrary.

In February 2012, Miami center Reggie Johnson was ruled ineligible by the school after an investigation revealed that members of his family accepted "impermissible travel benefits" from a member of the school's former coaching staff, without specifying Fernandez or anyone else by name. The university said Johnson was not aware of the benefits, personally accepted nothing and that his family had been told they were allowed.

Johnson was reinstated quickly last season, and remains a key part of this season's team - now ranked No. 2 in the nation and leading the Atlantic Coast Conference. The ongoing cloud of the scandal is not hurting the Hurricanes, basketball coach Jim Larranaga said Tuesday night.

"If it was overshadowing what we were doing, this room would not be packed," Larranaga said after his team beat Virginia. "We're getting so much exposure. We can only focus on the things we have control over. We have nothing to do with the investigation."

Several other former Miami coaches are named in the allegations as well, including one-time men's basketball assistant Jake Morton, who the NCAA said, among other things, accepted "supplemental income" of at least $6,000 from Shapiro. Morton is now on the staff at Western Kentucky.

Haith's charge is specific to how he handled things when Shapiro allegedly wanted money in exchange for not going public with accusations that he paid to help the Hurricanes recruit a player.

"After learning of the threat, Haith failed to alert anyone in the athletics department administration about Shapiro's threat, ask reasonable questions of Morton to ensure that Shapiro's claim lacked merit or disclose the fact that Morton engaged in financial dealings with Shapiro," read Haith's portion of the notice of allegations, which Missouri revealed Wednesday. "Rather, Haith gave Morton funds that Morton then provided to Shapiro."

Missouri has been told by the NCAA that it, as an institution, does not face any possible sanctions, but that Haith's ability to coach may be affected "if he is found in violation by the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions or the NCAA Division I Infractions Appeals Committee."

Some of the allegations in the letter the NCAA delivered Tuesday to Miami are more than 10 years old, including a claim that Shapiro bought a suit for former Miami star running back Willis McGahee to wear to the Heisman Trophy ceremony in 2002.

Other allegations include that he paid for dinners at Benihana, televisions, sneakers, Miami Heat tickets, bowling parties, one player's engagement ring, a used washer-dryer set for current New England Patriots lineman Vince Wilfork, and that he directed his girlfriend to give two former Hurricanes no-show jobs for a couple of months.

?The Heart Of The Matter?

?How many of us think about our purpose on a daily basis, you know the reason why you were created? Or the reason why you were given certain talents and characteristics? Even better how you can take your trials and tribulations and turn that into your purpose. I believe that my purpose is to help people to understand health and fitness, as a passion of mine I hardly consider it work. I am an advocate of health and am proud.

February is national heart month so I want to address this topic that is an epidemic in our community. I have a personal vendetta against heart disease it was one of several diseases that took my mothers life at the age of 47. Heart disease, which can also be called cardiovascular or coronary heart disease,?is a simple term used to describe several problems related to plaque buildup in the walls of the arteries, or atherosclerosis. As the plaque builds up, the arteries narrow, making it more difficult for blood to flow and creating a risk for heart attack or stroke. With a fear of it being hereditary I went through a 80 lb weight loss myself and?have made it my mission to spread knowledge and awareness about health related issues that are the cause of poor eating habits and lack of exercise.

There are quite a few symptoms for heart disease but what some people don?t know is that they are slightly different in women. Women can experience a heart attack without the pressure on their chest unlike men.?Nieca Goldberg, M.D., medical director for the Joan H. Tisch Center for Women?s Health at NYU?s Langone Medical Center and an American Heart Association volunteer says that woman?may experience shortness of breath, pressure or pain in the lower chest or upper abdomen, dizziness, fainting,?upper back pressure or extreme?fatigue.?Even though heart disease?is the No. 1 killer of women, women often chalk up the symptoms to less life-threatening conditions like acid reflux, the flu or normal aging.?A heart attack?strikes someone about every 34 seconds. It occurs when the blood flow that brings oxygen to the heart muscle is severely reduced or cut off completely. This happens because the arteries that supply the heart with blood can slowly narrow from a buildup of fat. Ladies please don?t disregard any symptoms that you have that are out of the ordinary. Listen to your body it will tell you when something is wrong.

This disease and what happened to my mother is my purpose of creating Curvy Chick Fitness, I want women to be vibrant, happy, and healthy and it starts with health and fitness. There needs to be awareness in women?s health our issues and symptoms are different than a man even though the remedy and prevention methods are very similar. Good health affects your life in so many ways you feel better, look better, and more alert to what is going on in your life mentally, physically, and emotionally. If you can?t do it alone then hire someone. People take better care of their cars and homes with all these upgrades and remodeling but then treat their body like crap it doesn?t measure up. Invest in a nutritionist and a trainer if you feel that you have the will power to do it on your own then fine do that. Do your research and find what works best for you. It?s your life take control and discover your purpose.

For those that would like some advice on heart healthy exercise tips:

  • Stretching the arms and legs before and after exercising helps prepare the muscles for activity and helps prevent injury and muscle strain. Regular stretching also increases your range of motion and flexibility.
  • Cardiovascular or aerobic activity strengthens the heart and lungs and improves the body?s ability to use oxygen. Aerobic exercise has the most benefits for your heart. Over time, aerobic exercise can help decrease your heart rate and blood pressure at rest and improve your breathing.

?

  • Strengthening, repeated muscle contractions (tightening) until the muscle becomes tired; for people with heart failure, many strengthening exercises are not recommended. Some examples of Aerobic Exercises are walking, jogging, jumping rope, bicycling, skating and low-impact aerobics or water aerobics.

I hope this article finds you in good health if not then I hope it helps get you there.

Sincerely,

Charity Lynette of Curvy Chick Fitness

The end of doomsday predictions isn't near

Guillaume Horcajuelo / EPA

Two men dressed in tinfoil stand in the French village of Bugarach. The mountain near Bugarach was touted as a haven from the Maya apocalypse last December. The mountain survived, as did everything else.

By Stephanie Pappas
LiveScience

Y2K? A bust. Judgment Day 2011? As quiet as a mouse. The Mayan apocalypse? Certainly not now.

As they have throughout history, failed doomsday predictions come and go. But with the Pope resigning, an asteroid whizzing near the planet Friday?and a completely unrelated space rock exploding over Russia, it seems a good time to ask: What's next?

Plenty, as it turns out. Previous failures have in no way shut down doomsday predictors, and dates are set for possible apocalypses in 2020, 2040, 2060 and 2080 (zeros have an appeal, apparently). One of these doomsdays was even predicted by Sir Isaac Newton himself.

"It's clear that these kinds of scenarios return over and over and over again," said John Hoopes, an archaeologist at the University of Kansas who has studied doomsday predictions.

The end is nigh
Doomsday prophecies date back thousands of years. The ancient Persians kicked off the hobby of apocalypse predictingin the Western world, Saint Joseph's University professor Allen Kerkeslager told LiveScience in December 2012. When the Zoroastrian Persians conquered the ancient Jews, they passed their end-of-the-world beliefs into Jewish culture, which subsequently handed them to Christianity. Now, everyone from Protestant preachers such as Harold Camping, who predicted Armageddon in 2011, to UFO cultists and New Age mystics occasionally jump on the doomsday train.?

The most recent apocalypse prediction was tied to the Mayan calendar, even though actual Mayans and scholars who study ancient Maya culture pointed out repeatedly that the calendar was never meant to predict the end of the world. The appointed day (Dec. 21, 2012) came and went without fire and brimstone.

But failures haven't stopped aspiring doomsday prophets in the past. In one of the most notorious apocalypse failures ever, American Baptist preacher William Miller predicted the return of Jesus Christ on March 21, 1844. Nothing happened, so Miller and his followers revised the prediction to Oct. 22. When that day, too, passed without incident, it was dubbed the Great Disappointment. [Oops! 11 Failed Doomsday Predictions]

Likewise, Camping predicted the Rapture three times in 1994 before his 2011 predictions.

The Pope's doomsday
So it should come as no surprise that doomsday believers have plenty of dates to fixate on in the future. Friday's ultimately harmless asteroid flyby may trigger more anxiety about world-ending asteroid impacts in the near future, Hoopes told LiveScience. A Friday morning meteor explosion that shattered windows and injured more than 1,000 in Russia is likely to do the same.

The surprise announcement of the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI last week has also triggered doomsday chatter.

In 1595, a Benedictine monk published a series of prophecies he claimed came straight from the pen of a 12th-century archbishop, Saint Malachy. The prophecies are short phrases, each said by future interpreters to match up with a particular pope. For example, the phrase "out of the guardian goose" has been linked to Pope Alexander III (1159-1181), because his family coat of arms sported an image of a goose.

Pope John Paul II (1978-2005) is said to match the 110th phrase on the list, "from the labor of the sun," because he was born and entombed on days when there were solar eclipses. That makes Benedict XVI number 111, "the glory of the olive." A monastic order founded by the saint from whom Benedict took his name has a branch known as the Olivetans, though Benedict himself is not one of them.

Here's where the prophecies ? which are completely discredited by the Catholic Church and suspected to be forgeries ? get fun. Line 112 reads, "In the extreme persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will sit Peter the Roman, who will nourish the sheep in many tribulations; when they are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The end." [End of the World? Top Doomsday Fears]

So is the next Pope the last before the apocalypse? History may not bear out any doomsday predictions, but prognosticators such as Thomas Horn and Cris Putnam, authors of "Petrus Romanus: The Final Pope is Here" (Defender, 2012) certainly think this one has legs. The theory has the advantage of involving the Catholic Church, an institution often accused of conspiracy. Conspiracy theoriesare often a component of popular doomsday theories, Hoopes said.

Successful predictions have to "hook into some deeper fears," he said.

Any day now
If the Pope prophecies don't pan out, there's plenty more to see. Numerologists have placed bets on both 2040 and 2080, interpretations that come from the Jewish text the Talmud and the Islamic holy book the Quran.

Psychic Jeane Dixon, who became famous through her newspaper astrology column and who often touted herself as having predicted John F. Kennedy's assassination, claimed that Armageddon would come in 2020. But though Dixon did occasionally make predictions that seemed to pan out, she was frequently wrong, as a 1980 article in the Lakeland Ledger pointed out. For example, Dixon predicted that Fidel Castro's days were numbered in 1968 (Castro is still alive and remained in office until 2011). She also said the two-party system of government would vanish from the United States by 1978, which would come as news to today's Democrats and Republicans.

Dixon, who died in 1997, was so famous that Temple University mathematician John Allen Paulos named the phenomenon of someone advertising correct predictions while ignoring many more failed ones the "Jeane Dixon effect."

But Dixon's fame has nothing on Sir Isaac Newton, the famed mathematician who figured out the principals of gravity. Newton had a side interest in apocalypse speculation, it turns out. A devout Christian, Newton was wary of human fallibility in interpreting prophecies, according to Stephen Snobelen of the University of King's College in Nova Scotia, who has researched Newton's writings. But he did muse in private about the date of doomsday, adding up important biblical numbers to arrive at 2060.

On the other hand, Newton would not have wanted a reputation as a doomsday predictor, Snobelen wrote in a statement. In his musing on 2060, Newton wrote, "It may end later, but I see no reason for its ending sooner. This I mention not to assert when the time of the end shall be, but to put a stop to the rash conjectures of fanciful men who are frequently predicting the time of the end, & by doing so bring the sacred prophesies into discredit as often as their predictions fail."

In just over two months? time, the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) will stage the largest ever golf tourism convention to take place in the Asia-Pacific region, in the Award-winning destination of Pattaya. This without doubt will be the most important golf travel event ever staged in Thailand.

IAGTA?s 2nd Asia Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC) will take place at the Royal Cliff Hotel and PEACH Convention Centre from 29 April to 2 May 2013. IAGTO?s president, Peter Walton announced that already 142 golf tour operators from 36 countries had confirmed their attendance. These buyers are coming from China, Malaysia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, Australia, Europe, Noerth America and from as far afield as South Africa, Argentina and Brazil.

Walton said, ?With more than 150 accredited buyers expected to attend, all promoting and selling golf destinations in Asia, this is without doubt a great opportunity for Thai hotels, golf resorts, golf courses and regional golf destinations around the country to meet, discuss and do business for the coming season. Already 45 Thai golf tourism suppliers have signed up to attend and we currently have capacity for 60 in total out of a total of 180 supplier companies from 18 countries in the Asia Pacific region. A total of 500 delegates are expected to attend AGTC this year.?

Established in 1997, IAGTO is the global trade organisation of the golf tourism industry, and its Thailand division already has 70 member companies, making it a truly representative body for Thailand?s golf tourism industry. All Thai companies attending the AGTC for the first time are automatically provided with IAGTO membership for 2013.

Walton added, ?IAGTO works 365 days a year to support and provide services for its members and the AGTC is just one of the many activities that we carry out during the year. All hotels, golf resorts, golf courses and licensed receptive operators who work in Thailand?s golf tourism industry, whichever markets they focus on, should consider becoming a member of IAGTO. We expect our Thailand division to soon increase to over 100 company members.?

IAGTO takes over 400 golf tour operators on familiarisation trips to 35 countries every year and the Tourism Authority of Thailand will be hosting 80 buyers and media on inspection trips in Pattaya in pre- and post-AGTC familiarisation tours.

Commenting on the benefits that golf tourism brings to Thailand, Walton said, ?On average, golf travellers spend 120 percent more per person per day in destination than general leisure travellers. This is more than double and therefore golf travel is without doubt High revenue-Low Impact tourism sector. With over 60 million golfers worldwide and some 25 percent of regular golfers take a golf holiday each year, golf travellers are influential in other sectors of the economy including Luxury Travel, Meetings & Incentive Events and Real Estate sales.? He then added, ?So golf tourism is much more than a niche market in Thailand.?

Walton also remarket on the important role that Thailand plays at the heart of the ASEAN Economic community, adding, ?All countries of AEC are important golf destinations and golf markets, and within this region Thailand is the leader in terms of golf tourism and therefore having AGTC in Thailand is a pivotal event for the countries of the ASEAN region.?

Established in 1997, the IAGTO is the global trade association of the golf tourism industry with more than 2,000 member golf resorts, golf courses, hotels, tour operators and tourist boards in 91 countries, including 487 golf tour operators in 61 countries.

These golf tour operators control more than 85 percent of all golf holiday packages sold worldwide, with annual sales exceeding US$1 billion.

288 of these golf tour operators in 52 countries sell golf destinations in the Asia Pacific region and of these 223 in 43 countries sell Thailand.

Country singer Mindy McCready dead in apparent suicide

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Country singer Mindy McCready was found dead Sunday "from what appears to be a single self-inflicted gunshot wound," police said.

Deputies investigating a report of gunshots found McCready's body on the front porch of a home?in Heber Springs, Ark., according to the?Cleburne County Sheriff's Office.

McCready, 37, had battled substance abuse.?

?As sad as it is, it didn?t come as a major shock, because she?s just been battling demons for so long," Billy McKnight, McCready?s ex-boyfriend and the father of her 6-year-old son, told TODAY on Monday. ?I was around her when she attempted suicide twice, so I knew it was in her.?

Story:?McCready's ex: Apparent suicide 'didn't come as a major shock'

She had a No.1 country hit in 1996, when she was just 21, with "Guys Do It All the Time." Her other popular songs included "Ten Thousand Angels" and "A Girl's Gotta Do (What A Girl's Gotta Do)."

"I grew up listening to?Mindy McCready...so sad for her family tonight," Grammy-winning country singer Carrie Underwood tweeted. "Many prayers are going out to them."

Wynonna Judd tweeted, "Oh my! Mindy. Dear sweet girl. This is so sad. It just breaks my heart what addiction continues to take from this life."

McCready, who has dated such famous men as "Lois and Clark" star Dean Cain and Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens, has had more problems than hits in recent years.

Mark Humphrey / AP file

Her relationship with Clemens made headlines in 2008. McCready told "Inside Edition" that she was just 16 when she met the married Clemens, but said their relationship did not become sexual until years later. Clemens issued a statement saying only, "I have made mistakes in my personal life for which I am sorry."

On Monday, Clemens released a statement calling McCready's death "sad news," and adding, "I had heard over time that she was trying to get peace and direction in her life."

In 2010, she appeared on "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" seeking help for her battle with substance addiction.

Her biography for the VH1 show states, "Although she was arrested and jailed for trying to buy OxyContin with a false prescription and attempted suicide with an overdose of drugs and alcohol, Mindy?believes her only true addiction is to violent relationships."

In an interview with The Associated Press in 2010, McCready called her life "a beautiful mess."?

She added: "My entire life things have been attracted to me and vice versa that turn into chaotic nightmares or I create the chaos myself."?

In 2011, McCready's mother reported that the singer and her young son Zander were missing. McCready's mother was Zander's legal guardian. The singer returned her son by order of a judge. She gave birth to another son, Zayne, in April 2012.

In January, her boyfriend David Wilson died of a gunshot wound in his Heber Springs home.?McCready later appeared on TODAY and called Wilson her "soulmate." When asked by NBC's Andrea Canning if she shot Wilson, McCready replied, "Oh, my God, no. He was my life. We were each others' life."

Authorities are still investigating Wilson's death and have not named McCready as a suspect.

On Feb. 6, McCready's publicist said the singer was admitted to an inpatient facility, though the cause was not specified. Her two sons were placed in foster care while McCready was being treated.

Appraising Some Manly Antiques - Plymouth-Whitemarsh, PA Patch

At my events, I cut to the core. No nonsense, no delicate high-brow vocabulary, no malarkey. I tell it like it is. If you have a piece of junk, I tell you. If you spent too much money on something, I tell you. If you are hoping to become of millionaire on a collection of Pez dispensers, I tell you that it?s not happening in this lifetime.

I have been known to break a heart or two and I have been known to reveal that the ugly lamp you have can make you a millionaire in the antiques market.

And, I reveal my faults too?like my well-documented and obvious (particularly on my thighs and hips) addiction to chocolate bars. My antiques appraisal shows?presented more than 150 times every year-are funny and frank.

I have been told by my audience members the world over that my presentation style is engaging just like the wealth of information that I reveal about antiques. As audience members, men are typically brought to my appraisal events by their wives but they quickly become my most devoted fans. Men return to my events day after day, event after event when I appear in a particular city.

In Philly, I laughed with the male owner of a Shirley Temple doll worth $275. After I appraised it, he told me that only a real man would be comfortable enough to bring a doll out in public to an appraisal event.

Ray was at my antiques appraisal comedy show in Houston, Texas. He was on his way to the gym when his wife asked him if he could attend my appraisal event instead. He didn?t mind the diversion too much until his wife said that she wanted me to look at some piece of china she bought at a yard sale.

He convinced her to bring me an old book that was in his family originally from Spain. Wrapped in a black plastic trash bag, the book was a hand painted illuminated manuscript with period text and original paintings. Produced in the mid 1600s about the time of the reign of King Philip of Spain, the manuscript was worth $10,000.

Paul?s story warms my heart. I was presenting my appraisal show in Louisville, KY when a guy in his mid-30s puts a copper weathervane on my object table and tells me that he doesn?t know what he?s got but one of the neighbors told him it might be worth some money.

I explain how weathervanes do have good value in the marketplace and that his example has a strong provenance and is attributed to a particularly well known maker. I tell him that it is worth $15,000. All of a sudden this guy - who could be a linebacker in the NFL - starts crying like a baby in front of God and everybody. Wiping his eyes on his shirtsleeve, he jumps up, runs towards the stage and hugs me. No one knew what he was going to do but after he calms down and returns to his seat in the audience, he explains that his grandmother?s house is in foreclosure, he has been supporting his extended family for months, and that now he can start down the road to recovery by selling the weathervane (which was incidentally on the barn of the property in foreclosure all these months).

Someone had offered him a mere $1000 for the weathervane but he didn?t believe it was worth so little. He was thrilled to know the truth.

Sports collectibles, guns, edged weapons, fishing lures and reels, and other objects are the typical types of antiques and collectibles that I review at my events, but sometimes the real men show up with something interesting and unexpected. Guys want me to cut to the chase and tell it like it is. I?m all for it. Let?s hear it for the boys!

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 vs HTC One vs Sony Xperia Z

With smartphone screens getting bigger by the month, it is no longer surprising to see new phones emerging to rival Samsung?s gargantuan Galaxy Note 2.?In this face-off the two main contenders at the moment are the Sony Xperia Z and the HTC One. While the former has already been officially revealed, the latter is still being kept under wraps, which means it is necessary to base the comparison on well documented rumours.

So now the gloves are off and it is time to find out whether the Galaxy Note 2 can beat back the pretenders to its title. We shall see who wins in a fight of Samsung vs Sony vs HTC.

?

Looks

The Galaxy Note 2 is a slab of a phone, taking up even more room than its predecessor and weighing in at 180 grams. It is still under a centimetre thick and its styling echoes that of the smaller Galaxy S3, with rounded corners and a physical homekey beneath the display.

Chrome detailing around the edge and a built-in stylus give the Galaxy Note 2 some personality, with different colours available to suit different tastes.

The Xperia Z from Sony is smaller and lighter, using premium materials and going for a standard glossy black finish throughout. It is also the only one of the three that is waterproof and dustproof, which makes it stylish and surprisingly durable.

Leaked images show that the HTC One (M7) will be a little larger than the One X handset that it replaces, as well as benefitting from a quality unibody chassis and a flatter, thinner design than that which came before.

It is quite difficult to separate the three from an aesthetic point of view, in part because this is a subjective decision and also because they are equally well designed.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 vs HTC One vs Sony Xperia Z

Screen

If you are looking for sheer size, the Galaxy Note 2 is still the big daddy thanks to its 5.55 inch Super AMOLED display. It packs a 720p native resolution, which gives it a healthy pixel density of 267ppi.

However, size is not everything, as demonstrated by both the Xperia Z and the HTC One. Sony?s smartphone has a five inch display with a full HD 1080p resolution, while the HTC handset is a little smaller at 4.7 inches but still has that 1080p pixel count to work in its favour.

This means that the Xperia Z will have a pixel density of 441ppi, which is a good deal higher than that boasted by the Galaxy Note 2. The HTC One will go higher still, although its vital statistics have yet to be revealed.

All these numbers basically mean that in spite of its extra size, the Galaxy Note 2?s display will look a little less crisp and clear when compared to its rivals.

To make up for this the use of Super AMOLED technology means that the colour saturation and brightness on the Galaxy Note 2 will outpace the LCD panels found on the other handsets.

The Xperia Z uses Sony?s Bravia Mobile Engine to improve display performance, which will make a difference, so its higher resolution might still give it the advantage.

Of course the ultimate determining factor might be which one you can actually fit in your pocket or the palm of your hand. And the HTC One is likely to win in that respect.

?

Operating System

All three of these phones run Android Jelly Bean, although only the HTC is likely to land with version 4.2 onboard while Sony and Samsung provide version 4.1 out of the box and promise an update in the future.

It is the manufacturer-concocted interfaces that help to define these handsets. So even if the Android framework is identical, they can provide different experiences.

The Galaxy Note 2 features the latest iteration of Samsung?s TouchWiz and there are of course a number of apps specifically designed for use with the included S-Pen stylus.

Sony?s interface is cleaner and more minimalistic, running as smooth as silk and offering good integration for media playback and social networking.

The HTC One brings with it the promise of Sense 5.0, which is a the firm?s overhauled interface that looks to be a little more grown-up and refined than it has before.

Sony Xperia Z vs HTC One vs Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Power

When it comes to raw power, all of the phones are evenly matched in most respects. They all have quad core processors and clock speeds range from 1.5GHz for the Xperia Z up to 1.7GHz for the One, with the Galaxy Note 2 sitting squarely between them.

You also get 2GB of RAM onboard all three, so things like load times and multitasking should be relatively similar, at least in theory.

The thing that really makes the difference is how well each manufacturer has optimised the software to take advantage of all this processing might. Thankfully there is no weak link here, at least when considering the two phones that have actually been revealed in public.

HTC still has a chance to take the performance crown with the One if it manages to make a good marriage of the hardware and the software.

?

Camera

The Galaxy Note 2 has an eight megapixel camera with full HD video capture, along with a front-facing 1.9 megapixel secondary snapper.

Compared to the 13 megapixel cameras bolted onto both the Sony and HTC handsets, it looks a little outdated. Better low light performance is boasted by the Xperia Z, while you can expect the One to offer simultaneous video recording and still image capture.

?

And the best 5 inch smartphone is?

Buyers will need to pick the phone that best suits their needs and budget, but in this battle of Samsung vs Sony vs HTC, you could argue that it is the Xperia Z that comes out on top.

This 5 inch smartphone hits the sweet spot for display size and processing power, as well as offering a durable design not found elsewhere.

We?ll soon be able to unveil the new HTC One spec.

You can skip to the end and leave a response. Pinging is currently not allowed.

New genus of crustacean and five new species

Feb. 15, 2013 ? On recent expeditions to Madagascar and the French Polynesia, two Spanish researchers have discovered five new species of crustacean and a new genus named Triodonthea .

Experts from the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes and the University of Barcelona (UB) collected and studied different crustacean specimens during recent expeditions to Madagascar, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Philippines and French Polynesia.

Using morphological and molecular data they have discovered five new species of crustaceans in the waters of these regions. They are genetically different but morphologically very similar and they also found a new genus, named Triodonthea. The five new species documented in the study belong to the Lauriea genus of the Galatheidae family, which is differentiated easily from other species of the group as it has very long setae and their legs end in a double spine.

"The Triodonthea is a new genus that it genetically very different from the Lauriea species despite being very morphologically similar. The morphological differences are small to our eyes but reflect great inequalities on a species level," as explained? by Enrique Macpherson, researcher at the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes and co-author of the study along with Aymee Robainas-Barcia from the UB.

The description of any new genus is based on the fact that a certain species possesses characteristics that nearby species do not. The separation and ordering of species into genera and families consists of grouping species according to common characteristics using Linnaean Taxonomy, a modern-day biological classification system.

"These species (both from Lauriea as well as Sadayoshia) can be found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans but not in the American Pacific. They are generally in shallow water and mostly in areas of coral reef. Some are endemic, as they only live on an archipelago or in a very specific area, whereas others spread from Madagascar to the French Polynese," points out Macpherson.

This study forms part of previous work that began more than 20 years ago in 1976 with French and US expeditions across the entire Indian and Pacific Oceans. "We have explored the oceans to a depth of up to 5,000 m," ensures the researcher.

The expeditions collect samples from diving, nets, traps and dredges, etc. Animals are separated on board or in the laboratory and then sent to the experts of each taxonomic group. Macpherson specialises in this group of crustaceans: the squat lobsters.

Chimps Have Better Short-term Memory Than Humans

Boston ? Chimpanzees may have more smarts than humans, at least regarding short-term memories, new research suggests.

A Japanese researcher presented a video showing the remarkable abilities of a chimpanzee named Ayumu, here at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Thursday (Feb. 14). When the numbers 1 through 9 appeared randomly on a screen and then disappeared, the chimpanzee was able to recall the exact sequence and location of each number. Ayumu has also learnt numbers 1 through 19 and is able to touch each one in ascending order, which hasn't been shown before, Tetsuro Matsuzawa, a researcher at Kyoto University's Primate Research Institute, told Livescience.

As Matsuzawa showed the video to a room of scientists and journalists, murmurs of amazement were heard. "Don't worry, nobody can do it," Matsuzawa said, with an almost mischievous smile. "It's impossible for you."

A select few humans have such abilities, but these are typically people with savant syndrome, which is accompanied by severe mental disabilities; it's simply beyond the powers of an ordinary human, Matsuzawa said. On the other hand, six out of six chimpanzees tested could rapidly remember the location and order of nine digits, he said. [8 Amazing Non-Human Primate Abilities]

This incredible short-term (or "working") memory helps chimpanzees survive in the wild, where they often must make rapid and complex decisions. Working memory is an active form of short-term memory, a mental workspace that allows the brain to juggle multiple thoughts simultaneously.

For chimps, the amazing working memory likely helps the animals navigate the branches of huge trees to feed, for example, or decide what to do when competing groups of animals are threatening one another, he said.

The Essentials of Human Web Design | Copyblogger

Image of the Modern Portfolio theme for WordPress

Raise your hand if your website is designed for little Martian men. Go ahead. Don?t be shy.

Anyone? Anyone? I didn?t think so.

Our sites are created for human interaction. And we human beings ? for all our splendiferous variety ? share some universal behaviors, no matter where we?re from.

As publishers to the open web, we ignore these behaviors at our peril. What are they?

I thought you?d never ask.

Here are a handful of essentials for designing websites that humans want to read ?

Humans want to interact, so make it easy.

Have you ever seen anyone navigate the Internet at gunpoint?

Me neither. For the most part, it?s a voluntary act. People click around because they?re looking for something. They want to interact with what they find.

And yet, website after website puts up barriers and makes interaction difficult. They use clever names, obscure taglines, and ?funny? navigation terms that leave their site visitors scratching their heads, or worse ? clicking away.

What can you do on your site to make it clear and easy to use?

Feature a straightforward introduction.

If your site is in English, your visitors will read it from top to bottom and left to right. When they arrive on your home page, their eyes will naturally go to the top left in search of confirmation that they?re in the right place.

At the top of your site, your readers should find your business name and your tagline. These essential words will let them know they?ve found what they were looking for.

Use obvious navigation terms.

If there?s a fire in the restaurant you go to tonight, will you look around for the egress? The portal? Or the exit?

When people click on the links in your navigation bar, it?s because they want to leave the page they?re on, and go someplace else. That means it?s not the place to trot out your creative tendencies and start calling your ?About? page ?Full Disclosure,? or ?Dispatch from Headquarters.?

Just call it ?About? and stop making your visitors work so hard.

That goes for all your navigation items. Label them in plain English using the most universally understood terms you can find to describe what users will get when they click.

Humans need to read. Don?t get in their way.

Websites are sculpted with pixels, and the most important pixels on the page are your words.

To get those words read, use these important design concepts to set them off and make them easy to absorb.

Embrace the white space.

If you expect readers to pore over line after line of your copy, give them a visual break. That?s what white space does.

Add white space to the left and right of your content area to give your words room to breathe. Don?t be afraid to space your lines out a bit ? text on the web is easier to read when it?s not quite as compact as text on the printed page.

Show some mercy on our eyes.

There?s an evil design trend that?s popular right now. The older my eyes get, the less I like it. I call it the ?tone on tone? style.

You?ve seen it before ? it?s grey text on a light grey background, or brown text on a tan background. It?s colored type on a background that?s a slightly lighter version of the same color.

It?s low contrast, it?s not reader friendly, and it won?t help your cause.

Instead, use high contrast styles. Want the most readable text of all? Go for dark text on a light ground.

Here?s a site about contrast I found thanks to Copyblogger?s lead designer Rafal Tomal. It shows you why contrast is crucial. Spend two minutes reviewing it, and you?ll never go low contrast again.

Go with the scanning flow.

As readers scan through from top to bottom and left to right, you want them to see and read your information in a specific order. You don?t want their eyes jumping around the page, landing on lots of distracting graphics and text.

Position your content so that when they move through it, they?re absorbing your information in order. Put the most important item higher on the page, just below your header, and on the left.

Then use visual hierarchy to move them through your page at the pace and in the direction you want them to go.

They want to know who you are. Show them.

The first time your site visitors hit your home page, they?re full of questions.

What is this site? Who runs it? What do I understand about the values and personality of this business?

Because first impressions are visual, it?s important to answer these questions in the first few seconds with your site?s design.

Your tools of choice are colors and fonts.

Stick to two main site colors.

Look around on this page. Copyblogger?s two main colors are dark grey and red. Yellow is used as an accent color, and stands out since it?s used sparingly.

That?s the effect you want to aim for. Want more on color? Sign up to watch my free Color Clinic webinar replay here.

Custom fonts add personality and make your site stand out from the crowd.

It?s easier than ever to bust out of the standard group of web fonts and experiment with fresh font combinations. For some inspiring (and free) custom font combinations, read this post by Brian Gardner.

Keep those eyeballs on your content.

Websites are made for the people that will visit them. There?s no greeter on your home page to welcome your visitors. That?s the job of your site?s design.

Work with human nature and not against it. Just keep asking yourself, ?What would make it clearer?? and you won?t go wrong.

What will you do to welcome your website visitors and keep them engaged? Let?s share ideas in the comments.

Discover The Best Known Home Improvement Tips | Home ...

Even if home improvements are not something you are familiar with, there are tips you can find of great use. Arm yourself with the proper information to make your home projects go smoothly and safely. Read on for some useful home improvement advice.

A nifty home improvement idea is the installation of a steel door in place of your regular front door. One study indicates that an entry door made of steel will more than pay for itself when the home sells. Most homeowners recoup almost 130% of their investment. Your home will be more energy efficient and have better curb appeal with a steel entry door.

Save money by just changing the doors on your cabinets. Not everyone can go out and buy new cabinets. Door replacement is cheap, though. You just need to ensure that you properly measure beforehand in order to figure out the tools you?ll need. Installing these doors are very simple. You only need to replace the hinge.

Putting in heated tile floors is an inexpensive way to add value and enjoyment to your home. If you are already planning to install tile floors, talk to a flooring person about using radiant heat. The sales person will be able to guide you on which type of flooring should be used as well as the options available for radiant heating. Some of the cost for this upgrade can be recaptured when you sell your home.

Make some room on your tables and nightstands; buy a lamp that sits on the floor. Floor lamps rest on the floor, so they have more placement options. By contrast, table lamps eat up lots of space on the table surface. Find a lamp that has a design that fits your personality.

Now that you are well versed in the basics of home improvement, it is time to start on your own projects. The ideas in the piece above should engender great confidence in your ability to make the changes you want, and do so in the proper way.

(AP) ? Coming off a three-week break, Matt Kuchar might not remember golf feeling this easy.

He opened with three straight birdies, all of the putts inside 3 feet. He made back-to-back birdies late in his first round at Riviera. He made seven birdies, the longest putt from 8 feet, on his way to a 7-under 64 for a one-shot lead over Sergio Garcia on Thursday in the Northern Trust Open.

Garcia, making his PGA Tour debut after two tournaments in the Middle East, finished with two birdies over the last three holes even though he could barely see. Fog dropped in at Riviera over the final two hours after a day of warm sunshine, and Garcia could barely see the landing area in the fairway or the flags on the green.

No matter. He closed with an 8-iron to 6 feet on an elevated green at No. 9 for his seventh birdie.
